Back to the Future

Chapter 7

A/N: I hope everyone had a great week! If not, good job working hard and getting through it! I hope this cheers up anyone that is sad and makes anyone already happy, happier! <33333 (That was super sappy, but I'm just excited for the weekend)

Sophie's first day at school in years was incredibly boring. She knew everything and by the time she had to go to Councillor Bronte's class she decided enough was enough, she was skipping class. Sandor was following her around everywhere, but with some well-timed brain pushes and running she managed to get away from him.

She headed to Keefe's patented hang-out spot, the place where they first met and sat down. Stretching out she was glad she remembered to grab her iPod and headphones that morning. In the future, she had the newest phone, but this was the best she could do here. She stuck the earbuds in her ears and turned on some music. She closed her eyes, almost falling asleep.

When she woke up that morning Keefe was still asleep, but when she woke him up he was up in seconds and running out the window. It was a good thing he did because Edaline came in moments later to wake her up for school.

She was lost in thought before someone poked her. Her eyes flew open to be met with ice-blue ones. Keefe was standing above her and smiling, "You're in my spot," he said.

"I don't see a name tag,"

"Just scooch over," Keefe said, and she obliged while laughing. Moments later Sophie was curled up in his arms and she offered him one of her earbuds. He gladly took it.

"What are you ditching?" He asked. 

"Inflicting, you?"

"I've been ditching basically all day. I don't even know what class I'm supposed to be in."

Sophie laughed, "That sounds about right, at least lunch is next."

Keefe smiled, "Good point."

They continued talking until they lapsed into comfortable silence listening to music.

Sophie and Keefe arrived in the cafeteria after the bell rang and realized how awkward lunch was about to be. Fitz was sitting at the table and he glared at both of them when he saw them. Biana was sitting next to him, she glanced up with a sympathetic look but turned back to Fitz.

Linh and Dex smiled when they saw them and Sophie figured they were the safest people to sit with at the moment. She started to grab Keefe by his hand when she saw Fitz staring so she just gestured with her hand for Keefe to follow her.

"Hey," She said when they sat down.

"Hey Sophie, Keefe, how's your face?" Linh asked, reminding Sophie of Fitz punching him yesterday. She said it almost sadly, it was clear how much she was affected by Tam being in the Neverseen. Sophie wanted to just give her a hug and promise that everything would be okay, but she knew she couldn't.

"It's fine," Keefe said, glancing over at Fitz who was tense, his jaw clenched. Linh sensing the tension doesn't say anything else.

The lunch continues in silence until Fitz yells, "Can everyone stop pretending like yesterday didn't happen!"

Everyone looked over at Fitz in shock and only Keefe noticed Sophie's flinch at his raised voice, at the memories of yesterday. He looked at her questioningly, "Are you okay?" he mouthed, completely ignoring everyone who had started to look their way.

She transmits into his mind, I'm fine.

She turns to look at Fitz whose face is murderous, he starts speaking, "Does anyone have any updates on the Neverseen?"

People take it as a reason to start talking and avoid the awkwardness and they start talking about what had happened. Sophie tried to listen, but Keefe nudged her and mouthed, "No seriously, are you okay?"

She transmits to him again, Fitz's yelling was abrupt, and for a moment it brought me back to yesterday.

She opens her mind up to him and his thoughts fill her mind. Somehow Keefe knew that she didn't want to dwell on the bad and stressful because his next thought was, I'll let you play with the Hair all night if it will cheer you up.

A grin jumped to her face so fast that her only reaction was to slam her hand over her mouth to hide it. Everyone noticed she coughed to cover it up. They turned back to their conversations and she transmitted back to Keefe, Deal.

Then they joined in on the conversation and everything proceeded as normal for the rest of the day. That night Keefe snuck into her room and he stayed true to his promise. His hair was a mess by the morning, and although Sophie assured him he still looked cute Keefe rushed to the bathroom to try and fix it.

The rest of the week progressed quickly. Sophie would go to the first couple of her classes before ditching to hang out with Keefe, lunch would be tense with the group and Fitz, but Keefe would keep trying to make her laugh and that made up for it. The day would end with Keefe slipping into bed next to her and his presence making it possible for Sophie to be able to sleep well.

Sandor wasn't the problem she used to think he was, she would just get away from him and then meet up back at lunch. At first, he was extremely upset, but she promised that she was always with one of her friends that had a bodyguard so things tended to work out for her.

Ro was extremely easy to handle, she barely paid any attention to anything. She would just sit around and pick her nails with a knife.

Her happy bliss was ruined on Friday when Sophie had Telepathy. With Fitz. Although Mr. Forkle, also known as Magnate Leto, hadn't really noticed Sophie's skipping her other classes he would definitely notice if she skipped Telepathy.

That day at lunch she was sitting with Keefe on one side and Fitz on the other. As much as she wanted to get away from Fitz there were no other seats at the table when they got there. Sophie knew what was coming and she bounced her leg up and down, not able to focus on anything anyone was saying. Keefe tried to help her, but nothing could stop her anxiety.

The bell rang signaling the end of lunch, Keefe gave her hand a squeeze and Sophie got up and walked with Fitz to Telepathy. It was extremely awkward as they walked side by side, Grizel and Sandor behind them totally ignoring their charges and talking to each other. She could only imagine it would get a lot worse.
