Five months later

Nathaniel let out a breath as looked over the pile of papers in front of him.

He rubbed forehead with his index finger and middle finger and sighed again.

He looked up at the clock.

Six in the evening.

There were barely any people present around him, the office was mostly empty with only a few staying back for work.

Nathaniel was one of them to stay as well, not like it's new for him. He stayed in the office more than he was allotted too.

He didn't feel the need to go home.

There wasn't anything that held him back.

There was nothing that made him go home early.

There wasn't any home to begin with.

Nathaniel remembers going to her apartment that night five months ago he knew she wouldn't be there but he still hoped for her like a little boy.

The apartment was empty like she hadn't lived there before.

Seeing the empty apartment made him sad, but he can't do anything.

That apartment held memories he will cherish his whole life and seeing it empty was something he couldn't take.

It felt like those memories were just his imagination.

At that moment Nathaniel promised to be better.

He promised to change. He promised to become better like she wanted.

Even though she's not with him but her memories are with him, he doesn't want to forget her by drowning in alcohol and destroying everything they had, he wants to cherish the memories they made. He wants to be a better man like she wanted him to promise himself. He wants to start everything all over again.

And this time he kept the promise.

With her cat with him, he had someone to talk to.

The starting two months were a full struggle, no one was ready to give him a job. He had no money with him to eat anything,  due to not paying the electricity bill the power supply was cut, he had nothing but shelter over his head. He was basically a homeless man at home.

He doesn't know how he managed those two months but he did.

He didn't give up, he hunted for a job till he got one.

It's a small publishing company with not many employees. He got the post of junior editor there and since then he's been surviving in this busy world.

The salary wasn't much but enough for him and Ginger.

A month ago he even started going to group sessions where people like him talk about their issues, talk about the better person they want to be.

The session helped him to keep his mind at ease. It felt comfortable to talk with those who have the same problems like his, it felt good to not be judged. And in the last month he hasn't sipped a drop of alcohol in his system. First, it was two drinks a day, later one and lastly none.

He didn't crave to drink but whenever he felt like drinking he smoked a little. His smoking habits have also decreased, he smokes when he's stressed and he tries his best to not stress himself.

Life felt good. It felt peaceful.

Without anything to ease him he talks a lot about his issues with Ginger or in the group sessions. It helped him a lot.

He was moving on in life and it felt good. But deep down Nathaniel was not happy.

He misses her everyday. He wrote her letters every day but never sent them cause he doesn't know where she is. Not like he has the guts to send her even after knowing where she lives.

He writes everything he keeps in his heart. It felt good to pen it down on the paper, Nathaniel knew he would get no answer but still it felt good.

His heart ached for her. It ached till the pain felt unbearable for him. Her thoughts occupied his mind, her smile, her eyes, her weird laugh, she would bite her bottom lip when she became nervous.

She loves cake, especially chocolate. She always used to say the main reason she applied for a job at the cafe was because of the chocolate cake they sold.

She has stolen and ate more cakes than the owner can ever imagine.

Just the thought of her makes Nathaniel's eyes water. He wanted to beg for forgiveness, she deserves someone much, better some who isn't him.

Nathaniel sighed again and straightened his posture and started to work again.

The sound of typing echoed throughout the dark office room.
