Jamie Willard has never been happier. She couldn't remember the last time she was this happy. She was engaged once, but that ended on a sour note, and when she met Penelope, it was like all of her worries had disappeared, and Penelope felt the same way. Penelope introduced her partner to her team and they were more than welcoming with open arms.
"When are you two getting married, baby girl?" Derek Morgan had asked Penelope, who blushed, squeezing her partner's hand. "It'll happen when it happens."
Now, nearly a year later, things began to crumble with their relationship. Penelope came home one night and looked around for Jamie, who was waiting for her on the couch in the living room. It was 10 PM, and it was the earliest Penelope had came home in about a month. Jamie had began harboring doubts with Penelope's faithfulness, but she would soon find out that wasn't the case. "Wow, you're home early for once." Jamie scoffs, standing up as Penelope stood in the room, her eyes glossy with guilt. "Listen, Jamie, there's something we need to talk about."
Jamie sighed, as she sat back down, while Penelope sat next to her. "So, um, I know lately, I'd been out late and I promise you it's because of the cases my team have been on. I'd never lie about that. You know that too," Penelope tells her, grabbing her hands, and Jamie waited for her partner to continue, "With that being said, I got a call from Com Tech in San Diego, California. How they got my number, I have no clue, but babe, they offered me a full time position to do all kinds of computer-like abilities to help out businesses who have had their computers, cell phones, etc., hacked. It's an opportunity I cannot pass up. I ran by it by Hotch, and he was more than happy to put in a good word for me, and-"
"When did they offer you this position, Penelope?" Jamie asks, cutting her off. Penelope sighed, as the guilt returned to her eyes, "2 days ago. But the team got a case and I had to stay on, so-"
"So you're going to take it? Just like that?" Jamie asks, hurt brewing in her eyes, and Penelope whimpered a little, lifting her partner's face, "I-I already accepted it. I'm leaving in a few days."
Jamie bounced up onto her feet, her hurt turning into anger, "You already fucking accepted it?"
Penelope's tears began falling from her eyes, "Jamie-"
"No. You don't accept anything until you speak to me. I deserved to be spoken to before you make a decision about anything, especially if it's a job that's going to take you like, 5,000 miles away from me. I have a job too, Penelope. I run a business, I have clients who depend on me for making sure their shipments come in. I make good money and I cannot continue the business in California." Jamie snaps, and Penelope scoffed, "What about me, huh? As much as I love being a technical analyst for the FBI, I feel like this new job opportunity would make me happier. I'd be helping people who have been hacked illegally. That's my dream."
"I thought your dream was me." Jamie says, wiping her tears. Penelope caressed her face gently, "It is. I-I want you to come with me. I know your business is important to you, but can't you get someone else to take over?"
Jamie shook her head, "You say you leave in a few days, so that would mean I'd have a few days just to train the person I pick to take my place. Yeah, no. That's not even going to happen. It took me weeks to learn how to do my job."
"O-Okay. Well, how about train the new person and in a couple of weeks, come out to California? I'll give you the details-"
"No. I'm not coming with you." Jamie told her, folding her arms. Penelope looked at her sadly, knowing what was happening. "I figured you'd say that. So, I guess a long distance relationship isn't doable?"
Jamie shook her head, "No. I guess that means it's over."
Penelope sobbed, taking her face. "I'll always love you, Jamie." She says, pressing their lips together. "I'll always love you too, Pen. But this really hurt us, and I don't think we'll be able to recover from this." Jamie tells her, and Penelope pulled back from her. "I'm sorry." She sniffed and walked into their bedroom and began to pack her things. Jamie, although hurt and angry that the love of her life was leaving her, decided to help her pack. She knew how bad this hurt her, but she didn't want to seem like she was letting go easily, even though she was.
"There's nothing I can say or do to change your mind?" Penelope asks as tears poured out of her eyes. Jamie shook her head, "Not unless you change yours, which wouldn't be fair to you. I'd rather give up my dream than have you give up yours."
Penelope sobbed in her arms, "I'm so sorry, Jamie."
Jamie sighed, rubbing her back. "It's fine. Let's just get you packed up."
They continued to pack through their tears and a few days later, as Penelope was getting ready to walk out the door, she noticed the nightstand drawer was slightly sticking out, and she pulled it out more until she realized what it was. She picked up the box and opened it, revealing an engagement ring, and she broke down once more, causing Jamie to run over and stopped in her tracks when she realized what Penelope found.
"You...you weren't supposed to find that." "Can I keep it?" Penelope asks, and Jamie raised her eyebrow in confusion. "Why would you?"
"Just in case." Penelope says, looking down at the ring.
"Penelope-"
"Jamie, who knows? Maybe I'll end up coming back. Maybe we can pick up where we left off. I can always come back to the FBI and we'll go back to normal-"
"Penelope, what if you and I fall in love with other people?" Jamie asks her, and Penelope chuckled, caressing her face. "I don't see that happening. Do you really see that happening?"
"Maybe." Jamie says, putting her hand down. Penelope frowned, looking back down. "You're really giving us up, huh? It doesn't hurt to have hope that maybe someday we'll come back to each other."
"You gave us up the moment you accepted the job in California. You knew how I felt about mine." Jamie snapped, taking back the ring from her. Penelope didn't say anything but she nodded in defeat. Jamie seemed to be serious, and she just needed to accept it. "Alright. Have a nice life, Jamie." She says, grabbing her luggage and walking out, and Jamie watched her get into the moving truck and drove away.
Jamie was right. She did end up falling in love with someone else, and Penelope, though it took her a LOT of time to get over Jamie, sending her constant texts and calls with no success, ended up meeting someone new as well.
It may be goodbye now, but will it be the last time they see each other?
