(Now the story will be in the present...)
The tension between Nari and Jungkook was palpable as they worked through Seokjin’s notebook. Jungkook knew more than he let on—he’d known about Nari’s father for a while but wasn’t ready to reveal it yet.
He wanted her to discover the truth on her own terms, and he’d be there to protect her when the time came.
The next morning, as Nari poured herself coffee, her exhaustion was evident. Despite it, she was determined to uncover the truth. Jungkook watched her, his gaze softening for a moment.
"Did you sleep well?" he asked, his voice unusually gentle.
"Not really," Nari admitted. "I keep thinking about Seokjin's words... my mother, my father... there's so much I don’t know."
Jungkook leaned back, his face unreadable. "We'll figure it out together. I’ll make sure you get the answers you need."
Nari nodded, but her mind was still racing. "What if there’s stuff I won’t want to know?"
Jungkook reached across the table, taking her hand in his. "You’re not alone in this. I’m not going anywhere, Nari."
She smiled, reassured by his touch. There was comfort in his presence, but also suspicion about how much he was hiding.
"Let’s meet Yoongi today," he said, shifting the conversation. "He can help with your father’s connections. Seokjin trusts him, and that matters."
Later, they arrived at a quiet café where Yoongi was waiting. Jungkook stayed close to Nari, his protective arm around her waist.
Yoongi greeted them with a nod. "Seokjin filled me in. What exactly are you looking for?"
Nari hesitated, but Jungkook spoke up. "We need to know who’s still interested in Nari. Seokjin mentioned people watching her—possibly enemies from her father’s past. We need to find them first."
Yoongi’s expression was serious. "There are people who remember your father, Nari. If they see you as a threat or a resource, they'll come for you."
"I just want to understand my father and why my mother lied to me," Nari said firmly.
Yoongi nodded. "I can give you some names. But once you start asking questions, word will spread."
"We’re ready," Jungkook said, his voice unwavering.
"Be prepared," Yoongi warned. "This path is about more than just your father. It’s about you now."
As they left, Jungkook stayed silent, his arm still around Nari. She looked up at him, sensing his tension. "Are you okay?"
"I’m fine," Jungkook replied, but his gaze softened. "Just thinking."
"About what?"
"About you," he admitted. "I just want to make sure you’re safe. This world... it’s dangerous."
Nari stopped, facing him. "I know it’s dangerous, but I can’t run from it. I need the truth."
Jungkook’s grip on her tightened, his vulnerability showing. "I won’t let anything happen to you. I promise."
Nari smiled softly. "I trust you."
Later, they stood outside a dilapidated warehouse. The next name on Seokjin’s list was Park Jimin, an associate of Nari’s father. Jungkook's fingers drummed on the steering wheel, his mind on the truth that was about to unfold.
"You ready?" he asked, his voice softer than usual.
Nari nodded, her hands trembling. "As ready as I can be."
