As the night deepened, the mansion was silent, except for the occasional creak of the old wooden floors. Nari had fallen asleep in her room, curled up beneath the soft blankets, the glow from the moon casting a faint light across her face. But that peace was shattered in an instant.
A sudden loud bang echoed through the halls, followed by another.
Gunshots.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she shot up in bed, panic setting in as she quickly threw the covers aside. Her breath quickened, her mind racing with thoughts of danger and death. She rushed toward the window, peering out into the darkness, her pulse hammering in her ears.
It was a strange quiet before the storm-a strange stillness before everything went chaotic.
She could hear footsteps outside her door-heavy, deliberate. She didn't know if it was Jungkook, Taehyung, or someone else, but she couldn't wait to find out. The shots had been so close. So real.
A sudden crash from the hallway startled her, and she spun around. The door to her room burst open, revealing Taehyung, disheveled but looking unbothered by the chaos around him. His shirt was slightly torn, his hair messy, but his eyes-those cold, calculating eyes-were locked on her, his expression a mixture of concern and something else, something she couldn't place.
"Nari," he said, his voice calm, almost too calm for the situation. "You heard that?"
"Taehyung-what-what happened?" Her words came out in a rush, her voice shaky as she backed away from the door, her heart still hammering in her chest.
"I heard the shots too. Don't worry," Taehyung said smoothly, stepping toward her with a measured stride, as if everything was normal. "I'll make sure everything's alright."
She could hardly make sense of it. Gunshots-so close, so real. But here was Taehyung, appearing like nothing was wrong. She tried to stay calm but couldn't suppress the suspicion gnawing at the back of her mind. Something didn't add up.
Suddenly, Taehyung turned to face her fully, standing inches away. "You don't have to worry," he said softly, his eyes scanning her face, as if memorizing every detail. "I'll protect you."
Nari's gaze flickered down to his hand, where he was holding a small, sleek black pistol. Her stomach churned as she processed the scene in front of her. His casual demeanor, the gun in his hand-it felt rehearsed.
"Taehyung," she whispered, her voice trembling, "who was shooting?"
A faint smirk tugged at his lips, but he said nothing. He just moved closer to her, his presence so overwhelming that she couldn't back away even if she wanted to. She instinctively looked up at him, feeling a strange warmth mixed with uncertainty, her mind still racing with questions she couldn't answer.
"I've got it covered," Taehyung said again, his voice smooth and unruffled. "You're safe now, Nari."
She was silent for a moment, her mind still trying to piece things together. The gunshots-the fact that Taehyung was the one here first, so calm and composed, with the gun in hand... It didn't sit right. But despite the gnawing suspicion in her gut, she couldn't help but feel a strange sense of relief. He was here, wasn't he? He was protecting her. She wanted to believe him, to trust him, even if something felt off.
"Taehyung," she said finally, a quiet resolve in her voice, "You saved me."
He smiled, but there was something cold about it, something detached. "Just doing my job, Nari."
She nodded, but deep inside, her curiosity was already starting to bloom. There was so much she didn't know-so many pieces she couldn't understand. But she had to find out. She had to uncover the truth. And if Taehyung was the one who was going to keep her safe, maybe she could use that to get closer, to learn what was really going on.
