Jungkook's expression was unreadable, but his tension was unmistakable. He took a deep breath, looking past her as if weighing how much to reveal.
Finally, he met her eyes, and what he said next shattered the fragile calm she had been clinging to.
"Your father sold information to my family," Jungkook began slowly. "Vital information about his rivals, the people who were after him. At first, it seemed like he was trying to protect you and your mother. That's what Namjoon believed when he brokered the deal."
Nari's heart pounded in her chest, her throat tightening with every word. "But there's more, isn't there?"
Jungkook nodded, his gaze hardening. "Yes. He didn't just sell out his enemies. He used the information he gave us as leverage, playing both sides, making deals with our rivals to undermine my family. All the while pretending to align with us."
Nari's breath hitched, disbelief hitting her. "So, he was using everyone?"
Jungkook clenched his jaw. "He put you and your mother at risk, all for his ambition. When my father found out, there were consequences. Severe ones. Namjoon brokered the deal, so he's always felt responsible for what happened afterward. That's why he's so protective of you now."
Nari's mind spun.
Her father hadn't been a victim of the mafia world; he had been a player.
A dangerous one.
And Namjoon-he had been caught in the middle of it all.
But what did this mean for her?
For her relationship with Jungkook?
Her voice trembled. "What exactly happened to him, Jungkook?"
Jungkook's eyes softened, a rare vulnerability crossing his face. "He was taken out, Nari. By someone close to him. My father didn't give the order, but in our world, betrayal like that doesn't go unanswered."
Nari's knees buckled, and she collapsed onto the edge of the bed.
Her entire body felt numb.
The father she barely knew had been at the center of a deadly game, and it had cost him everything-including her.
And now, this truth-this awful, tangled truth-was bound to her relationship with Jungkook and Namjoon in ways she hadn't even imagined.
Jungkook crouched beside her, his fingers brushing hers. "I wanted to protect you from this, Nari. I never wanted you to carry this burden. But it's part of the world we live in. And whether we like it or not, your father's choices are still casting shadows over us."
She stared at the floor, her thoughts a whirlpool of confusion, pain, and anger. Her father's legacy had shaped her life, and it seemed that no matter how far she tried to run from it, it always caught up to her.
But what frustrated her the most was that she hadn't known.
Not until now.
Everyone else had known-Jungkook, Namjoon, even her mother. And yet, she had been kept in the dark.
"So that's why Namjoon keeps bringing it up," she whispered, more to herself than to Jungkook. "He thinks I need to know what my father was capable of."
Jungkook nodded silently.
Nari's chest tightened, a mix of resentment and hurt swelling inside her. "And you? Do you think I need to know?"
Jungkook's gaze flickered. "I think you have the right to know. But I also think there's more to your story than just your father's mistakes. You're not him, Nari. And I'll be damned if I let his actions define what happens between us."
