I was greatly shocked by the terrifying discovery and finally understood, why the air here was so thick, full of dust and mainly colder than anywhere else. Dungeons were always a scary places to me and I never really dared to visit any before, so this was my very first time of being in the cells. I was lucky to not be locked up behind those metallic bars or worse, behind the heavy wooden door, that was framed by the strong metal. These doors had each a narrow, rectangular shape carved in them and the little space was filled with a row of short metallic bars, creating a sort of window. Huh, I didn't notice that before at all, probably due to the supposed windows being in the level above my head. I swiftly looked around the corridor and by some weird coincidence I saw a medium sized wooden stool laying in the corner, right beside one of the metallic doors. I slowly approached the spot and carefully peeked into the cell behind this door, where I could see just a few rats running around in search for some food. Despite these little animals not really paying any attention to me I still shivered upon the sight and carefully grabbed the said stool. It was covered by a heavy layer of dust, which I blew away from the surface and felt it tickling my nose. That caused me to nearly sneeze, but I quickly pressed my nose and waited for the sensation to wear off.
Afterwards, I moved towards one of the heavy wooden doors and carefully put the stool down in front of it. Taking a deep breath I got ready for whatever sight I might witness behind each doors, as I stepped onto the stool to glance into the first cell. Which was empty, much to my relief. I got off the stool and moved on to the next door, where I peeked into the cell and noticed something dark laying on the ground. I squinted my eyes and tried to make out, what I am looking at and eventually realized, that it was just some pile of stuffed sacks, since the object never moved even an inch of itself, regardless of how long I stared at it. Getting down I moved on to the third door and leaned against the massive wood to peek into the cell through the rectangular, bar-filled window.
My eyes widened at the sight of something definitely moving there, I could clearly see it in the soft light coming from the torch flames illuminating this area on the wall behind me. I would really like to believe, that it was just a rat, but for a rat this thing had too big and long tail. As the said tail moved a bit from the shadows of the cell, I could see the familiar black fluff with crimson tips decorating the tip of it. Then the realization hit me like a heavy carriage, as I froze in spot and even held my breath for a moment upon the utter shock flowing through me. No wait, shock is too weak word for this. I was straight petrified!
"S-Shadow?" I carefully called the creature's name and tried to figure out, how to get him out of here. I expected anything, but definitely not my king to be locked in a jail like this! Why would the queen do that?! Though, now it also makes better sense, as to why I was never informed by anyone about their departure. The vampire inside of the cell stopped moving his tail around and slowly turned his entire body to face me, as he, step by step, came out of the shadows and glared at me with the same hungry, vampiric eyes like during the night, when I first offered my blood to him. The white pupils contrasting against his black irises stared straight into my soul and his crimson scleras only added to his furious appearance.
"Shadow, snap out of it!" I tried to talk him out of it, but he wouldn't listen to me, as he leaped forward with a loud hiss and collided with the heavy wooden door, which separated me from him. I still got majorly startled and releasing a loud gasp I harshly fell from the stool I stood on for the whole time. The stool flipped onto its side and I groaned in pain shooting from my ankle and shoulder. Due to the not so wide corridor I was even close to hit my head against the wall, but thankfully that did not happen, as my quills just brushed the surface of the rocky bricks behind me.However, my physical condition was my minimal concern, as I rather focused on the vampire king now bashing the door and letting out non-mobian noises and hisses. What did the queen do to him?! I felt anger filling my core, as I carefully stood up and looking down at my ankle I tested it out. Okay, it still hurted, but it did not seem to be sprained or twisted, so guess I was truly lucky in such unlucky situation. I returned my glance to the wooden door in front of me and tried to ignore the slams and noises the vampire caused.
"Sonic!" I could hear a female voice calling my name, so I turned towards its source and quickly approached the cell with the barred metallic door. It was none other but Midnight, Shadow's mother. She tightly gripped the metallic bars while leaning against the door and seemingly had to drag herself to it, since she was sitting on the ground and heavily panted in the process.
"What's going on?" I asked her quietly and crouched down to her level while also checking her husband's condition with my gaze. The way he just laid there motionless scared me to the bone.
