Deep in the woods, as the internal struggle was happening, Teuta and her royal knights were fighting the battle of their lives. Huge gnolls appeared from the dense brush a mile away from the targeted location and began an ambush that felled several of them the moment the fighting started.
"Go! Get to the hero!" Teuta commanded Jean instantly. She had a grasp on the situation. It was dire.
"Take the prince, too!""What about you?" The mage questioned desperately, sending up a magical flare that illuminated the dark forest. They were almost completely surrounded except for a small opening that lead deeper into the territory. Their actual escape was completely blocked.
"This is not a winnable scenario. The enemy is funneling us into another trap, but if we can hold them here long enough it may allow you some leeway." As she said that a massive hammer dropped towards her from behind. She dove off of her horse as it hit it's mark and crushed the poor creature, killing it instantly. Djir drew his weapon back into both hands and stared down at Teuta cheerily, then at Jean. His brow lifted and his snout wrinkled.
"You smell familiar." He said to the mage. Cackles filled the air all around them as Teuta drew her sword.
"Go!" She ordered again. Jeane left. The mages, along with her 'superior' followed closely behind. They were eager to get away. The prince was trailing behind. His instinct was already to flee, regardless of what he was fleeing into. There was no thought of strategy for him, just survival.
"Who would've known the beasts could be so organized." The older mage rasped at Jean.
"Shouldn't you have known this, due to your dark heritage?" He swatted at her, but she was running just slightly out of reach. The girl had tossed her heels in favor of getting away and was doing quite well barefoot. Jean, for once, was not listening. She glanced back and stepped to the side as the prince rode ahead of them.
"W-wait!" She called out.The gnolls were not barbarians as the Kingdom promised. Though, their armor was of old design. There were furs covering their backs like cloaks, sure, but they also wore heavy plate with metal skirts to protect all of their vitals. Teuta realized first hand as several more of her own fell that the beastmen fought tactically. They covered each other and never seemed to leave an opening where her own elite knights could pick them off easily. It was nothing like they thought it would be.
Djir was something else, as well. Teuta was once considered a national treasure in terms of talent, and she was not holding her own against the man. In fact, it seemed like he was toying with her. She sighed deeply and glanced back at the closing lines. There was no longer an escape route. Teuta exhaled deeply. Her shoulders slumped. She felt her body failing her. Her muscles had faded for the Princes enjoyment and her skills had dulled due to lack of practice. She had only been practicing one thing as of late. Degeneracy had dimmed all of her blessings as the gods left her. She was completely alone. Djir loomed over her.
You step towards the swirling mass, find the essence that you know to be Kara's and reach for it. You do not know exactly what you are doing, but you understand the principle. Her essence is weakened. So, you simple have to bolster it. Surprisingly, without you even having to do much, the moment you touch the red and join your essence with hers the fight tilts in her favor. The white mass retreats from the red before getting slowly engulfed. For all the pageantry before, it is so unceremonious in the way things are won. Despite everything, it is somewhat sad to you to see the writhing white mass lose because in your heart you know it to be a symbolic loss, as well. She failed to be chosen once again. As red overtakes the empty space the landscape shifts.
It feels like waking up. You lift your head. Kara, real Kara, is staring up at you sullenly. The tips of her long ears are tinged with white.
"How do you feel?" You question.
