Landon happily counted the bills in his hand as Raf scarfed down on his third burger. “I could get used to this.” Raf smiled after he swallowed a big bite.

“You better.” Landon joked, but his smile faded when a 5 dollar bill with red writing caught his attention.

‘RUN, WOLF. OR DIE.’ It said, Landon stood up quickly, looking around for something hiding behind the trees.

“Lan?” Raf snapped him out of his fear induced trance, “You ok?”

“Yeah.” Landon cleared his throat. “Fine. Everything’s fine.” Just as he was about to sit down, two figures in the distance caught his attention. A brunette and a redhead. A familiar pair.

Back in the mahogany walls of the Salvatore School, Emma tried to calm the clearly shaken younger students as Alaric flipped pages aggressively. “Ric.” She tried to get his attention, but his eyes were glued to the papers. “Ric!” She raised her voice slightly, still mindful of the students.

A lightbulb seemed to have switched on in Alaric’s head. “Oh.”

“Care to share what’s on your mind?” Emma asked while stroking a child’s head to soothe them.

“It’s a gargoyle and the injuries it gave to Lizzie might turn her into stone.” Alaric’s eyes landed on his daughter’s stiff figure on the couch.

“What do we do?”

“You keep an eye out for Lizzie’s wound and update Caroline. She might tear my head off.” Alaric said, closing all the books. “I’ll get it as far away from the school as I can get.”

“How do you know it will follow you?”

“I have what it needs.” Alaric opened the door ever so gently. Motioning for the young students to stay quiet before he left.

He quietly entered his office, retrieving the knife from the top drawer. Drawing a quick breath before leaving the safe and comfort of his office.

The halls are eerily quiet. Alaric could hear his own heart beating. If he could hear himself, could it hear him?

Something frozen in the corner caught Alaric's eye. There it was, standing menacingly like it was nothing more than a lifeless statue. But he wasn't fooled. Especially because of the blood that stained its concrete claws.

His heart banged on his chest like a drum, but he pushed all worries aside. This is for Lizzie. For the students. For the school.

He raised his hand, aiming to strike it with the knife it's possibly looking for, but as his hand swung down, the statue gained life again. It had stopped his hand while letting out an ear shattering scream.

Back at the woods, Landon rubbed his eyes. Is he only seeing things? When he opened them, the two girls were still there in the distance.

“Lan, what's wrong?” asked Raf.

Whether or not his mind is fucking with him, Landon had no idea, but it looked like the girls were going to say something to him before they vanished. “Nothing. Thought I heard something.”

At town square, Hope's eyebrows knitted in confusion when Josie let go of her hands. “Why'd you stop?”

Josie clutched her abdomen in pain. Flashes of Lizzie frozen in fear filled her mind. Her sister's screams rang in her ears. Josie closed her eyes in pain, only to see the school and a dark creature with blood red eyes consumed her twin and neither sister could do anything but stand in fear.

“Josie?” Hope was becoming more and more concerned as seconds ticked by. “Josie! What is happening?”

“Lizzie!” Josie managed to blurt out despite the pain sawing her abdomen in half. “She's in danger. I can feel it.”
