Steve Rogers sat at the long table in the Avengers Tower common room, listening to the lively chatter of his teammates. His eyes kept wandering to Y/N, who was leaning against the counter, laughing at something Sam had said. She had no idea, did she? No clue that every time she entered the room, Steve's heart picked up speed, or that her laugh was practically his favorite sound in the world.
"So, Cap," Tony drawled, dragging Steve's attention away from Y/N. "When are you finally going to make a move?"
Steve blinked, feeling heat creep up the back of his neck. "Make a move on what?"
Natasha, lounging on the couch beside Tony, smirked. "On who, you mean. Don't play dumb, Rogers. Everyone can see how you look at her."
Steve shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Oh, come on!" Sam chimed in from across the room. "You're Captain America, for crying out loud! And you can't even ask Y/N out? It's almost painful to watch."
Bucky, sitting beside him, chuckled, shaking his head. "It's pathetic, really. You fought in wars, Steve. Wars."
Steve sighed heavily, running a hand through his hair. "I— It's not that simple."
"It's exactly that simple," Clint said, appearing from the kitchen with a grin. "You just walk up to her, ask her to dinner. It's not rocket science."
Steve glanced over at Y/N again, who was now obliviously chatting with Bruce about some tech stuff. She was so effortlessly kind, so bright. He wasn't even sure if she saw him in that way. Maybe she just thought of him as her teammate, her friend.
"I don't want to mess things up," Steve muttered, his voice quieter now.
Tony raised an eyebrow. "Mess things up? What's there to mess up? You've been pining after her for months. You're halfway there already."
"More than halfway," Bucky added with a knowing smile. "She's oblivious, but not that oblivious."
Steve frowned. "What do you mean?"
Natasha chuckled, exchanging a glance with Tony. "Y/N may not notice all the time, but she knows you care about her. Trust me, Steve, women can sense these things. You just need to stop hesitating."
"Stop being such a punk," Bucky teased, nudging his shoulder. "You've waited long enough."
Steve shook his head, his nerves getting the best of him. "I can't just—what if she doesn't feel the same way?"
"Only one way to find out, Cap," Tony said with a wink. "And if she says no, well, that's what you've got us for. We'll pick up the pieces."
"Or laugh at you forever," Sam added, earning a glare from Steve.
Steve stood, exhaling deeply as he straightened his shoulders. He was Captain America, after all. He had faced far worse things than rejection. He glanced over at Y/N again, who was now alone at the counter, scrolling through her phone.
With one last look at his friends, who were all watching him expectantly, Steve made his way over to her, his heart pounding in his chest.
"Hey, Y/N," he said, trying to sound casual as he leaned against the counter beside her.
She looked up, smiling brightly when she saw him. "Oh, hey, Steve! What's up?"
"Uh, nothing much," he replied, feeling his palms get a little sweaty. "I was just wondering if, maybe, you'd like to have dinner with me tonight?"
Her eyes widened slightly, clearly caught off guard by the question. "Dinner? Like, just us?"
Steve nodded, his heart racing. "Yeah. Just us."
For a moment, Y/N seemed to be processing his words, her smile faltering for just a second before it returned, even brighter. "Oh! Like...like a date?"
Steve felt his face flush as he nodded again. "Yeah. Like a date."
A slow grin spread across her face, and she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, looking almost shy. "I'd love that, Steve."
He couldn't help the smile that broke across his face. Relief washed over him as the tension that had been building for months finally lifted.
From across the room, the other Avengers erupted into loud, exaggerated cheers. Steve shot them a glare, but it was all in good fun.
Tony's voice carried over the noise. "Finally! Took you long enough, Rogers!"
Y/N laughed softly, giving Steve a playful nudge. "I was wondering when you'd ask."
Steve blinked, his eyes widening. "You...you were?"
She nodded, her cheeks slightly pink. "Yeah, I guess I'm not as oblivious as everyone thinks."
Steve grinned, feeling more confident now. "Well, in that case, I'm glad I finally got around to it."
Y/N smiled up at him, her eyes soft and warm. "Me too."
As the others continued to tease from a distance, Steve leaned a little closer to her, lowering his voice. "How about we ditch them and head out for dinner now?"
Y/N chuckled. "I'd like that."
And with that, the two of them slipped out, leaving the Avengers behind, still cheering and teasing Steve about his long-awaited victory.
