I don't know quite where to begin
It's kinda like describing red

Sam was a walking contradiction. She looked calm and friendly and sweet on the outside, but once you broke that shell she was the complete opposite. Yet that's one of the things Freddie loved most about her. Everything she did just reminded him of the color red. She was bright and bold and fiery. She changed moods faster than red changes to pink, which made it both exciting and extremely difficult for Freddie to keep up. Whenever he was asked why he was still with her or what he saw in her he couldn't believe it. What wasn't there to like about her? Even when she beat him up, or stole his wallet, or even changed his ringtone to dumb songs he let it go so quickly because behind the show she put up for everyone, he knew she really loved him. But when Freddie tried to tell that to other people he stammered and couldn't find a good place to start so people never believed him.

The thing her smile does to my heart
The same thing light does in the dark

And when Freddie threw himself onto his couch next to Sam after a particularly bad day, she immediately made it better. She sat next to him and pulled him down slowly until he was laying on her lap. She smiled softly at him and he felt a jolt tingle down his body. He felt like his whole world was lit up all at once. Who cared that he'd had someone spill their smoothie on him not once, but twice? Who cared that he had gotten a flat tire on the way home today? Who cared that he had got detention for something he hadn't even done? He certainly didn't. He had Sam, and with Sam what else did he need? And so he closed his eyes and laid down gently. He laid a hand on his chest and the corners of his mouth turned up as he felt her fingers slip into his. He slowly drifted off to sleep, the last thing in his mind Sam and her beautiful beautiful smile.

The kind of thing that words just miss
She is

The day Freddie told her he got accepted into MIT was both the best and worst day of his life. He ordered three boxes of pizza (two for her and one for him) and called her over. They were laughing at his table and talking about nothing and everything at the same time. Sam broke her record of most pieces eaten in 10 minutes (15) and Freddie broke his record of how many napkins he used to clean up after her (3 packages). After dinner while she was in the bathroom he got the important envelope from the table beside the bed. When Sam joined him in his room he handed it to her and she read the first few lines out loud. Once she realized what it meant she screamed out loud (yes Sam Puckett actually screamed) and threw herself at him. He hugged her tightly while she whispered how proud of him she was. Freddie knew that she knew what this meant for the two of them. They would be apart. On the other side of the country apart. Yet she wasn't letting any of those feelings show. She was making this night about him. They could worry about the rest of it tomorrow or a different day. For now Freddie was content to marvel at her goodness and kiss her repeatedly.

That empty hole inside of me
The one I don't let people see

On the day of his departure to college it was just Freddie and Sam. He had made sure that it would be like this saying goodbye to Spencer, Carly, his mom, and even Gibby the night before. He and Sam had taken a tent to a hidden corner of the park and stayed up late talking and eating the pairs seemingly endless supply of snacks. Finally Sam had remarked she was cold and they climbed into their sleeping bags, laying close together for warmth. The next morning they both had cramped necks but it was worth it. They had packed up the tent and driven very quietly to the airport. Freddie attempted to make conversation a few times but Sam gave him short answers and mostly stared out the window. Finally they were there and Freddie was due to board his plane any minute. Sam bit her lip and looked around somewhat awkwardly. She told him that she wished he didn't have to go, but she knew how much he'd love it. Then she quietly added not to forget her and quickly brushed the tears brimming in her eyes away. Freddie simply pulled her into his arms and whispered he wouldn't forget her, he could never forget her. She closed her eyes against his warm shoulder and gripped him tightly. As the fussy flight attendant repeated the call to board he begrudgingly let her go. She kissed him one last time and he squeezed her waist before waving and walking away, pulling his suitcase behind him. A few weeks later they were talking on the phone, and Sam was telling him about everything that had happened to her that day. She said some stupid kid with good hair had tripped her accidentally so she egged his house. Freddie swallowed thickly. It was so like Sam. He wanted to be there with her so badly, egging strangers houses with her and holding her hand and just- being there. There was a hole in his heart that could only be filled by Sam. She yawned and he remembered the time difference. He told her he loved her and then let her go. He leaned back in his desk chair, running his hands through his hair. College was great and he loved it. He fit in here, no one teased him for being a nerd, because that's exactly what everyone else was. Then he remembered that's exactly what he missed. Being called a nerd. By Sam. Sam.
