When it all starts out, he's just a boy that was never given a chance to be someone else and she's just a girl that was never given a chance to be herself.

Everything is set in stone for him. He's all rules and regulations and order and cleanliness. He's four-year plans and straight A's and eight o'clock bedtimes. He's the perfect child, Mommy's little prince. He's static.

Nothing is ever the same for her. She's all disobedience and rebellion and chaos and unruliness. She's week-long detentions and 1.7 GPAs and never knowing if there will be food on the table that night. She's a nightmare, a nuisance. She's inconstant.

When they meet, it goes just as expected and they hate each other. They're too different to get along, so it's decided that they never will. It's accepted, it's routine, it's him.

The predictability isn't her, but it's comforting to have something she can depend on. She can depend on Carly's friendship, she can depend on Spencer's goofiness, and she can depend on him to always fight back.

But then sometimes he does stupid little things that make her second guess herself. That obnoxious eyebrow quirk or that dumb little smile or maybe the way he looks at her with such caring that she's absolutely sure he doesn't hate her as much as he claims. And it's thrilling and exciting and she really wants find out what would happen if she took the risk, took another step deeper into their relationship.

But for someone so fearless, she's terrified.

Because what if she's misreading the signs? What if he does hate her, wants her gone from his life forever? What if he laughs in her face and finally gets her back for the years of humiliation she's given him? He doesn't like change. Why would he start now?

So the next time he smiles at her, smiles because of her, and her knees grow shaky and she wants to melt under his eyes, she stops. She gives him the worst glare she can muster, calls him the meanest name she can think of, and gets as far away from him as possible. She won't let him have this power over her.

Not that it would change anything.
