The sun set behind the hills, turning the sky into a mix of oranges and purples. The Fellowship had decided to set up camp for the night on a small clearing in the woods, surrounded by trees. The crackling fire flickered brightly, casting playful shadows all around. The cool air felt refreshing, but inside, you felt a different kind of warmth next to you—Aragorn.

You glanced at him. He was staring into the flames, looking deep in thought. His dark hair fell around his face, and you couldn’t help but admire how increddibly  handsome he was. It made your heart race a little, even though you both were just friends… kind of.

“I’ll take the first watch tonight,” you said, breaking the comfortable silence.

Aragorn turned to you, brows furrowed. “No way. You need your rest. I’ll take the first watch.”

“You haven’t slept in days! It’s my turn, and I’m perfectly capable,” you shot back, a slightly sharp tone in your voice.

He shook his head, his expression serious. “You need to rest too, (y/n). You can’t keep going like this.”

You crossed your arms, trying to keep your tone light. “And you can? You look exhausted! It’s my turn.”

“You are not going to be out there alone, while i sleep,” he replied, determination in his voice.

“Of course i will! I worry about you,” You threw your hands up in frustration. “I can’t help it!”

A small smile crossed his lips, but then it faded. “You’re carrying too much, and I can’t let you.”

Your heart sank a little at his concern. Why did it make you feel all warm inside? “This isn’t just about you, Aragorn,” you said, softening your tone. “It’s about both of us.”

He leaned closer, eyes serious. “I can’t sleep well if I know you’re out there in the dark.”

Just then, Gimli stomped into the conversation, arms crossed and a smirk on his face. “What’s all this fuss about? Are you two going to start singing lullabies next?”

You and Aragorn exchanged glances, a bit embarrassed. “We’re arguing about the watch,” you explained. “I want to take the first one, but Aragorn insists on doing it.”

The Dwarf chuckled, shaking his head. “You both sound foolish. Why not let me take the first watch instead? You two are clearly too busy squabbling to do anything productive.”

You blinked, surprised by the suggestion. “But Gimli, you need rest too!”

“Bah! I’ve had enough rest for three men! I’ll keep watch while you two settle down. And trust me, if anything comes close, I’ll let you know!” He shot a cheeky wink at Aragorn.

Aragorn sighed, a mix of relief and defeat washing over his face. “Alright, Gimli. You take the watch.”

“Perfect! Now go on, both of you. Get some sleep before I change my mind,” Gimli declared as he settled onto a log with a satisfied grin.

You turned to Aragorn, a mixture of emotions swirling inside you. “Well, I guess that settles it.”

“Yeah,” he replied, looking a bit sheepish.

As you laid back against your pack, the tension between you eased slightly. “I still worry about you, you know,” you whispered, half-heartedly trying to mask your concern.

“And I worry about you,” he said quietly, his eyes drifting back to the fire.

You both sat in comfortable silence for a moment, listening to the crackle of the flames. It felt nice, but you couldn’t shake the tension that hung in the air between you. You both cared for each other so much, yet neither of you had the guts to say it out loud.

Finally, you closed your eyes, allowing the sounds of the forest to lull you to sleep. Just before you drifted off, you caught a glimpse of Aragorn staring into the flames. You hoped he’d be okay out there, and deep down, you wished he would see how much you really cared about him.

As you fell asleep, you had no idea that Aragorn was watching you, a mix of longing and worry in his eyes. He wanted to tell you how he felt but knew he couldn’t. Not now, with so many dangers ahead. So, he stayed silent, silently vowing to protect you as best as he could, even if it meant letting you think you were the one looking out for him.
