The rain hadn’t stopped all day. It poured down in thick sheets, turning the ground into a muddy mess, and the wind howled through the trees like a distant warning. Everyone was exhausted, but the hobbits especially were looking worse for wear. With their sniffles and pale faces, it was clear they had caught colds from the endless walking in the rain.

That’s why, when you found the cave, Boromir had insisted everyone stop and rest. "We can’t keep going like this," he said, looking over the hobbits with concern. "Let them rest. The rain won’t stop anytime soon."

Now, hours later, you were all huddled around a small fire inside the cave, the warmth and crackling flames a welcome break from the cold and wet. Outside, the rain still pounded against the rocks, the sound oddly soothing in its own way. The firelight flickered, casting soft shadows on the cave walls.

You sat close to the fire, warming your hands and pulling your cloak tighter around you. Across from you, Boromir sat, cleaning his sword, always focused on the next step of the journey. His brow was furrowed in concentration, but you could tell he was tired too.

It wasn’t often you got a moment like this—quiet and calm, without the constant fear of what lay ahead. You glanced around at the rest of the Fellowship. Frodo and Sam were already asleep, bundled up in their cloaks, while Merry and Pippin were curled up close to each other, trying to stay warm. Gandalf sat nearby, puffing thoughtfully on his pipe, and Aragorn and Legolas kept a quiet watch near the entrance of the cave, while Gimli had insisted to stay outside the cave, looking out for any dangers.

Boromir caught your gaze and gave you a small, tired smile, his eyes softening. "You seem quiet tonight, (Y/N)."

You shrugged a little, smiling back. "Just... enjoying the quiet, I guess. It’s nice not to be rushing for once."

He nodded, his face relaxing slightly as he leaned back against the cave wall. "It is," he agreed, his voice softer now. "I hadn’t realized how much we needed a break until we stopped."

There was a moment of comfortable silence between you, the fire crackling softly as the rain continued to fall outside. You could hear the occasional cough from the hobbits, but the warmth of the fire seemed to be helping them settle down. The world outside felt far away, like the storm was holding back everything else for a little while.

Boromir shifted a little, moving to sit closer to you. The warmth of his presence beside you made you feel safer, like you didn’t have to carry the weight of everything alone. "You’ve done well," he said quietly, his voice low. "This journey hasn’t been easy, but you’ve handled it better than most would."

You blinked, feeling your cheeks warm a little—not just from the fire. "Thanks," you murmured, glancing down at your hands. "But you’ve been doing all the heavy lifting. You always seem to know what to do."

Boromir chuckled softly, the sound low and kind. "If only that was true," he said, shaking his head. "I have my doubts, same as anyone."

You looked up at him, surprised. Boromir was always so strong, so confident—it was hard to imagine him doubting anything. "Doubts? You?" you asked, tilting your head a little.

He glanced at you, his eyes thoughtful. "More than you know," he admitted quietly. "This journey... the weight of it sometimes feels like more than I can bear."

His words hung in the air for a moment, the rain outside softening just a little, like even the storm was listening. You reached out and gently touched his arm, wanting to offer some kind of comfort. "You don’t have to carry it alone, Boromir. We’re all in this together."

He looked down at where your hand rested on his arm, then back at you, his eyes warmer now, a little less guarded. "I know," he said softly. "But I’m not used to relying on others. Gondor... it has always been my responsibility to protect it, to be strong for my people."

You nodded, understanding a little more now. "You’re not alone, though," you reminded him. "We all have something to protect. And you don’t have to be strong every single second."

Boromir smiled at that—just a small, tired smile, but it made you feel like you’d said the right thing. "Maybe you’re right," he said, leaning back a little more, letting himself relax for the first time all evening.

The fire crackled between you, and the warmth made everything seem a little cozier, despite the storm outside. The rain was softer now, more of a background noise than anything else, and the cave felt like a little bubble of peace in the middle of all the chaos.

After a moment, Boromir glanced down at you again, his eyes flickering with something softer, something almost hesitant. "You should rest," he said, his voice gentle. "It’s not often we get a break like this."

You smiled up at him, feeling a warmth spread through your chest at his concern. "I will. But what about you?"

Boromir chuckled softly again, his eyes crinkling at the edges. "I’ll rest soon. I promise."

You weren’t sure why, but something about the way he said it made you feel safe, like you could actually let your guard down for a little while. With Boromir sitting beside you, the fire warm and bright, and the sound of rain softly drumming outside, you felt a sense of peace wash over you.

And for just a moment, it was enough to forget about the dangers waiting beyond the cave, enough to simply enjoy the quiet and the warmth of Boromir’s presence next to you.
