The path stretched on ahead, sun shining through the leaves as the Fellowship left Rivendell behind. You couldn’t help the excitement buzzing in your chest. A part of it was the thrill of the journey, sure, but you’d be lying if you said it didn’t have a little something to do with the elf at your side.
“(Y/N),” Legolas murmured, glancing over with a smirk, “you’re grinning.”
You felt heat rise to your cheeks and quickly tried to play it off. “What? No, I’m just… appreciating the scenery.”
His eyebrow arched, amusement dancing in his eyes. “The scenery, hmm?”
“Yes, Legolas, the scenery,” you shot back, rolling your eyes. “You know, trees, mountains… Very scenic stuff.”
He chuckled softly, his laughter like the rustling of leaves. “Of course. Then again, you did once try to climb one of those scenic trees and ended up tangled in the branches until I had to get you down.”
You groaned, covering your face with your hand. “You promised you’d never bring that up again.”
“Did I?” he replied, that playful glint in his eye only growing brighter. “Must have slipped my mind.”
You nudged him with your shoulder, trying to hide the grin creeping up on you. “Maybe I’ll prove I don’t need any help this time. In fact, I might be the one saving you by the end of all this.”
“Oh?” He leaned in closer, his face just inches from yours. “Is that a challenge?”
You gave him a sidelong look, your heart hammering in your chest. “Maybe it is.”
He opened his mouth to say something more, but Aragorn’s voice called from the front, urging everyone to keep pace. The moment broke, and you both continued walking, though you could still feel Legolas’s gaze on you as you moved.
You kept pace with the group until night fell and everyone set up camp. You were rolling out your blanket, trying to look calm and collected even as Legolas lingered nearby. Eventually, the others drifted off to their own spaces, and soon it was just you and Legolas, the only sounds around you the crackling fire and the soft rustle of leaves.
“(Y/N),” he murmured, his voice gentle.
You looked up to find him watching you with that soft, knowing gaze. You weren’t sure if it was the firelight or just the intensity of his eyes, but he looked different—familiar yet so, so much closer.
He moved toward you, his hand brushing your cheek as he studied your face, as if searching for something. His touch was gentle, making your heart race. “You know, I’ve always watched over you,” he whispered, a hint of a smile tugging at his lips. “Even back when you couldn’t climb a tree without my help.”
You laughed, barely managing to find words through the way he was looking at you. “And you’ve never let me forget it.”
“No, and I never will,” he said, his voice almost a whisper as he leaned closer, his face just a breath away from yours. Before you knew it, his lips brushed against yours, gentle but filled with so many things unspoken. His hand slid to the back of your neck, pulling you closer as the kiss deepened, warm and soft and sending shivers down your spine.
When you finally pulled back, a soft smile played at the corner of his mouth as he looked into your eyes. “Still so sure you don’t need me around to catch you?”
You laughed softly as you shook your head. “Maybe I could use you by my side a little longer.”
His fingers intertwined with yours, and you knew you had something more than friendship now—a closeness that made the path ahead seem a little less overwhelming and a lot more exciting.
