The woods of Ithilien were quiet as you moved through them, your senses sharp. Being a ranger, you were used to staying hidden and gathering information, but tonight something felt different. You couldn't shake the feeling that you weren't alone.
Suddenly, an arrow shot into the ground right in front of your feet, stopping you in your tracks. Your hand flew to the hilt of your dagger, ready for a fight, when a voice spoke from the shadows.
"Drop your weapon."
You knew that voice. Slowly, you turned, and out of the trees stepped Faramir, Captain of Gondor and son of Denethor. You'd recognize him anywhere, even after all these years. He had changed, though - taller, his features sharper, and more serious than the last time you'd seen him.
"Faramir?" you said, your hand still on your dagger. "Is that really you?"
Faramir blinked in surprise, clearly recognizing you now. His eyes softened, the stern look he'd been wearing fading. "(Y/N)? It's been... years. What are you doing here?"
You hesitated for a second before letting go of your dagger. "I could ask you the same. Last I heard, you were still in Minas Tirith, learning to be a leader."
A small smile tugged at Faramir's lips, though his eyes remained serious. "I'm the Captain of Gondor now. Things have changed since we last met." He looked you over, as if trying to understand why you were here. "But you... why are you in Ithilien?"
"I'm a ranger now," you explained, keeping your voice calm. "I was sent here from the North to track Sauron's forces and gather information."
Faramir's brows furrowed. "It's dangerous for anyone to be out here alone. Even for you."
You shrugged. "It's what I'm good at."
Faramir gave a quiet nod but didn't look convinced. "You should've sent word before crossing into Gondor's borders. My men could've shot you on sight."
You couldn't help but smirk a little. "You've always been cautious, haven't you?"
He sighed, though there was a hint of a smile on his lips. "That hasn't changed. You'll come with me to the camp. We can talk more there."
As you walked beside him through the woods, the memories of your shared past flooded your mind. You had known Faramir years ago, back when you were younger and had spent some time in Gondor with your family. The two of you had trained together, explored the city's outskirts, and had shared quiet conversations away from the chaos of court life. But then you'd left, returning to the North, and you hadn't seen him since.
It was strange seeing him again like this, older, more serious, and burdened by responsibilities.
"Things really have changed," you said after a while, breaking the silence. "You're a captain now. It suits you."
Faramir glanced at you, his expression softening again. "And you're a ranger. I never would've guessed that when we were younger."
You smiled a little. "Yeah, well, I had to do something with my life."
As you reached the camp, his men were already setting up for the night, lighting fires and settling in. Faramir stayed close by, his gaze thoughtful as if he was still trying to figure you out after all these years.
"So," he said after a pause, "you've come all this way, risking your life to track the enemy. You always were brave."
You shrugged, though his compliment warmed you more than you expected. "It's necessary. We can't let Sauron's forces move freely."
He nodded but then sighed. "I only wish my father saw things as clearly as you do."
You frowned at the mention of Denethor. You remembered him well - strict, cold, always pushing Faramir to be something more, something like his brother. "He still... doesn't see your worth?"
Faramir shook his head, his expression hardening. "No. He believes in Boromir. Always Boromir."
Boromir. You'd heard of his journey, the quest that had taken him far from Gondor. "You're still living in his shadow?"
Faramir gave a small, sad smile. "I always will. No matter what I do, it's never enough. I fight to defend Gondor, but to my father, Boromir is the future."
The frustration and sadness in his voice made your heart ache. You'd always known how much Faramir struggled under his father's expectations. Back then, you had tried to cheer him up, but now it seemed like nothing had changed.
"You don't deserve that," you said quietly. "Your father's wrong."
Faramir looked at you, his eyes searching yours. "You always said that."
"I meant it," you replied, your voice steady. "You've always been more than what he sees."
There was a heavy silence between you, filled with the weight of things left unsaid for years. The crackling of the campfire and the quiet murmur of soldiers in the background seemed distant as you stood there, facing each other.
Faramir stepped closer, his expression softening. "I've missed you, (Y/N). I didn't think I would see you again."
Your heart skipped a beat. "I missed you too, Faramir. I... I thought about you often, wondering how you were."
He smiled, but it was sad. "I've often thought of those days, before the war consumed everything. Before we became... this."
You didn't know what to say. So much had changed since then, but standing here with him now, it felt like some things hadn't changed at all.
Slowly, Faramir reached out, his hand gently brushing against your cheek, just like he used to do when you were younger, back when you were both more carefree. The touch sent a familiar warmth through you, and for a moment, it was like you were back in those simpler times.
"(Y/N)," he whispered, his voice soft and full of emotion. "I thought I'd lost that part of myself. The part of me that felt... hope."
Your breath caught as he leaned in, and before you could stop yourself, you closed the distance between you. His lips met yours in a gentle, lingering kiss that spoke of all the things you both felt but never said. The kiss was soft but filled with years of longing, a connection that had never really gone away.
When you pulled back, your heart was racing, and Faramir's forehead rested against yours, his hand still gently cradling your face.
"I don't know what tomorrow will bring," he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper, "but for tonight, I'm glad you're here."
You smiled softly, your fingers brushing against his hand. "Me too."
In that moment, with the firelight flickering around you and the weight of your shared past hanging in the air, it felt like you had found something you'd both been missing.
