It was the day before battle, and Edoras was a whirlwind of last-minute preparations. The people of Rohan were getting ready for the fight of their lives, arming themselves however they could. The Fellowship was right there with them, helping however possible. Legolas was stringing extra bows and Gimli was sharpening every axe he could get his hands on.
Im the middle of all this, you and Aragorn were hardly ever apart. Every time he wasn’t needed somewhere else, he’d be right beside you, keeping that silent promise to be together, no matter what. You were both trying to stay calm, but every time your eyes met, it was like the reality settled in all over again.
By sunset, you finally got a moment to yourselves. The golden light stretched across the hills as you stood by the edge of Edoras, looking out at the open land that would soon be a battlefield. All the fears you had pushed down were starting to bubble up. The last time you’d both tried to protect each other, back when you’d argued over who would take the first watch at camp, you had been just as stubborn. But it had felt different then. It hadn’t yet sunk in how much you meant to each other.
You were so deep in thought you didn’t notice Aragorn come up beside you until he slipped his hand into yours, his fingers warm against your skin. “Nervous?” he asked, his voice soft.
You glanced up at him. “A little,” you admitted, even though it felt like an understatement. “What if tomorrow is… different? Worse than anything we’ve faced before?”
He didn’t answer right away, but his thumb traced small circles on the back of your hand. “Then we’ll face it, as we always have. Together.”
You sighed, leaning into him a little, feeling the comfort of his presence. “It’s just… I can’t shake the fear of something happening to you. Back at the campfire, I thought I could protect you just by being stubborn. Now, I’m not sure I’m brave enough to lose you.”
Aragorn’s face softened, and he pulled you closer. “I remember that night,” he said, a slight smile tugging at his lips. “You practically dared me to try and rest, knowing you’d be on guard.” His voice turned serious as he added, “And I feel the same way. I’d rather stand by you, facing every danger, than be left wondering if you’re safe.”
Before either of you could say more, you heard the heavy sound of boots approaching. Gimli, carrying two freshly sharpened axes, came to a halt beside you, eyeing the two of you with a teasing smirk. “Ah, so this is where you’ve both wandered off to,” he said, chuckling. “Getting all sentimental before battle, are we?”
You shot him a look, but Aragorn was already shaking his head with a grin. “Gimli,” he said, clearly amused. “Just making sure we’re prepared.”
“Prepared, aye,” Gimli said with a grin. “I saw you two sneaking glances all afternoon. Thought you’d be off planning your wedding by now.”
You felt your cheeks heat up, but Aragorn laughed, pulling you even closer. “Perhaps one day,” he replied, giving you a meaningful look that made your heart skip a beat.
Before Gimli could add another comment, Legolas came over, rolling his eyes. “Leave them be, Gimli,” he said, though a small smile tugged at his lips. “Some of us would rather not listen to your meddling.”
Gimli huffed but stepped back, giving you both a mischievous wink before he left. As Legolas watched him go, he gave Aragorn a knowing nod. “Take care of each other out there. Even elves know the value of love in the middle of a storm.”
With that, he walked away, leaving you and Aragorn in a sudden, peaceful silence. You turned back to him, the weight of his gaze making your heart pound.
“Maybe we should,” you whispered, voice barely audible. “When this is all over… maybe we don’t need to keep waiting.”
His expression softened, and he took your face in his hands, his touch so gentle it almost undid you. “One day, when peace has come, I’ll take you away from all this. Somewhere safe, far from any darkness. And we’ll finally have a life that’s ours alone.”
Without another word, he closed the distance, his lips meeting yours in a kiss that left the world behind. It wasn’t the desperate, fearful kiss of people who thought they might never have another chance; it was a kiss filled with every promise he’d made to you, and every promise you’d made to him. There was no question anymore, no more waiting, just the two of you, completely and utterly together.
When you finally broke apart, he leaned his forehead against yours, still holding you close. “Remember,” he whispered. “No matter what happens, I am with you.”
You nodded, gripping his hand a little tighter, letting his words sink in. “And I am with you." You knew that everything might change. But as you stood there together, the warmth of his arms around you, you felt ready to face it all.
