Jungkook hummed under his breath as he walked down to the company cafeteria, clutching his wallet and muttering Taehyung’s usual order to himself so he wouldn’t forget. He felt lighter after leaving the office—his heart still racing from the lap incident, but at least he had space to breathe.

The cafeteria was buzzing with employees, the smell of coffee and hot meals wafting through the air. Jungkook smiled politely at a few stares (some curious, some whispering) and got in line. He tried to ignore the eyes, tried to act normal, tried to just focus on food.

But the moment he turned his head, his smile faltered.

At one of the corner tables sat Eunchae and Taehyung’s grandmother, sipping tea like they owned the place. Eunchae’s eyes lit up as soon as she spotted him. She excused herself, walking toward him with that practiced “shy” smile plastered on her lips.

“Jungkook-ssi,” she greeted sweetly, almost too sweet, like sugar that could rot teeth.

Jungkook bowed politely, not wanting to be rude. “Hello.”

“You’re buying lunch? How diligent,” she said, tilting her head like a delicate flower. “Taehyung oppa is lucky to have such… caring staff.”

The way she emphasized staff made Jungkook’s chest tighten, but he brushed it off. “It’s my job,” he replied simply.

Her smile twitched. She stepped closer, too close, and Jungkook instinctively took a step back. But in that subtle movement, her foot shifted, and before Jungkook could realize—

CRACK.

Pain shot up his ankle as it twisted against the tile floor. He gasped, stumbling forward. His tray clattered, food threatening to spill, but he caught it just in time—though his balance gave way.

“Ahh!” Jungkook winced, crouching down, his hand flying to his ankle. His heart raced, partly from the pain, partly from the humiliation as people turned to look.

Eunchae gasped dramatically, pressing her hand to her lips. “Oh no! Jungkook-ssi, are you alright? Did you… trip?”

Her voice was laced with fake concern, but her eyes gleamed.

Jungkook tried to stand, biting back the sting. “I-I’m fine…”

But before he could even test his weight on his ankle, a voice cut through the cafeteria like a knife.

“JEON JUNGKOOK!”

Everyone froze.

Taehyung’s tall, broad figure strode through the room, his expression sharp and terrifying enough to silence the whispers. His eyes, however, softened instantly when they landed on Jungkook crouched on the floor, his lips pressed tight against a whimper of pain.

Taehyung’s coat swished as he crouched beside him, not caring about the audience. “Where does it hurt?”

“M-My ankle,” Jungkook admitted in a whisper, cheeks burning from the attention.

Without another word, Taehyung brushed Jungkook’s hand away gently, inspecting the ankle himself with surprisingly tender fingers. His jaw clenched.

“You shouldn’t move.”
