Alexander's phone buzzed, shrill in the silence. Marcus answered, his voice low.
"Alexander's office."
A pause.
"Who is it?"
Another pause.
"Ethan wants to meet Alexander."
Alexander's gaze snapped up from his thoughts.
"Ethan?"
Marcus nodded.
"He's downstairs. Wants to talk."
Alexander's eyes narrowed.
"Send him up."
Marcus nodded and disappeared.
Alexander's thoughts churned. What did Ethan want?
The door opened, and Ethan walked in, his eyes locked on Alexander.
Alexander's office, once a sanctuary, now felt like a battleground as Ethan, his long-lost brother, stood before him. The air was thick with tension, the shadows cast by the dim lighting seeming to writhe and twist like living darkness. Ethan's grin twisted, his eyes gleaming with malice as he revealed the shocking truth.
"We're not just siblings, Alexander," Ethan spat, his voice dripping with venom. "We're rivals, bound by blood and a shared legacy of power." Alexander's eyes widened, his mind reeling as the past came crashing back. They had shared a childhood, but never a connection. Ethan, the outcast, had always seemed to resent Alexander's favored status.
"Father's expectations suffocated me," Ethan snarled, his eyes flashing with anger. "You, on the other hand, lapped up his approval like a starving dog." Alexander's jaw clenched, his fists trembling with suppressed rage.
"That's not true," Alexander growled, his voice low and deadly. "Father was harsh on both of us." Ethan's laughter echoed through the room, cold and mirthless.
"Harsh?" Ethan repeated, his voice dripping with contempt. "You don't know the meaning. Father's disapproval was a constant reminder that I was worthless." The room seemed to darken, the shadows deepening as the brothers' fractured past boiled to the surface.
Marcus intervened, his voice calm and measured. "Alexander, let's focus on the present." But Alexander's gaze remained locked on Ethan, his eyes burning with a fierce intensity.
"What do you want, Ethan?" Alexander demanded, his voice barely above a whisper. Ethan's grin twisted.
"I want everything," Ethan spat. "The empire, the power...and your downfall." The words hung in the air like a challenge, the silence that followed thick with anticipation.
Alexander's face twisted in rage.
"You think you can take my place?" he spat. "You're nothing but a footnote in Father's legacy."
Ethan's grin twisted.
"Ah, but I'm the one who'll write the next chapter," he sneered. "And you'll be nothing but a footnote in history."
Alexander's eyes blazed.
"You're getting involved in this because you want to take my place," he snarled. "But Lucas isn't interested, and you know it. You're just a pretender."
Ethan's laughter echoed through the room.
"Pretender?" he repeated. "I'm the one who'll claim this empire, and you're just a relic of the past."
Alexander's fists clenched.
"If I could kill you right here, I would," he growled. "But I'll play this game, and I'll win. You'll never take my place."
Ethan's eyes flashed.
"If you could kill me, do you think it would stop me?" he sneered. "What would stop me from killing you?"
Alexander's face contorted in fury.
"Nothing," he spat. "Because I'll be the one holding the gun."
Ethan's grin grew.
"We'll see about that," he whispered, his voice dripping with malice.
Marcus stepped forward, his voice calm.
"Enough. This isn't solving anything."
But Alexander and Ethan were beyond reason, their hatred and ambition fueling a fire that would consume everything in its path.
Alexander's frustration boiled over.
"Why are we even blood-related?" he spat, his voice venomous. "I don't ask for much, but I f*_ing hate you, you f_*ing bastard, asshole."
Ethan's grin twisted.
"Ah, Alexander, so quick to anger," he taunted. "But I exist to remind you of your own weaknesses."
Alexander's face contorted.
"Lucas is so much better than you," he snarled. "At least he has a conscience."
Ethan chuckled.
"Lucas is weak," he sneered. "He'll never claim this empire. But I will, and you'll watch me do it and you also don't have conscience mister."
Alexander's eyes blazed.
"You'll never take this empire," he growled. "I'll destroy you first."
Ethan shrugged.
"We'll see about that," he said, his voice dripping with malice. "But tell me, Alexander, what makes you think you're better than me?"
Alexander's jaw clenched.
"I don't think," he spat. "I know. I'm the rightful heir, not some twisted, sadistic bastard like you."
Ethan's grin grew.
"Rightful heir?" he repeated. "You mean Father's favorite puppet?"
Alexander's fists trembled.
"Shut up!" he roared.
Marcus intervened.
"Alexander, calm down."
But Alexander's rage had reached a boiling point.
Alexander's eyes narrowed.
"You think Lucas will save you?" he sneered. "He's not interested in this empire."
Ethan's grin twisted.
"Maybe not, but he's the only one who can stop you," he said, his voice dripping with malice.
Alexander's face contorted.
"You'll never find him," he growled.
Ethan's eyes flashed.
"Try me," he spat.
Suddenly, Marcus intervened.
"Enough. This is getting out of hand."
Alexander's gaze locked onto Ethan.
"You'll harm Emily, just like you tried to earlier," Alexander snarled.
Alexander's jaw clenched.
"I'll never let that happen," he vowed.
Alexander's eyes locked onto Marcus.
"Protect Emily, Marcus. At all costs."
Marcus nodded.
"I will, Alexander.
