"Salut maman. (Hey mom.)" I hear Charles's whispery voice as I turn in the bed.

"Hi baby." I hear a woman's voice answer, I recognize it as it is his mother's and I've already heard it a couple of times before when he'd talk to her on the phone. "How are you? How's the trip? How's the girl?" She bombards him with questions all at once.

"Good, good and I think great." He answers.

Supposedly I'm still asleep as he sits next to me in bed, and he doesn't know I've woken up. I'm just lying next to him, keeping my eyes shut not to bother him and make him end the call with his mother.

"Awh." Her voice is so soft and soothing, you can just tell she's a mother. "Did you meet her family yet?"

"Yeah, last night. They're super nice. And immensely funny." That warms my heart and I try not to smile as I keep a neutral expression.

His hand goes to my back and he softly caresses it as his hand slips under my shirt. He might actually be the cutest.

"That's good." She affirms. "Her parents are nice then?" Ouch. That one's an answer I'm curious to hear him answer.

"Oh, no. Her father passed a couple years back. And her mom, well, she doesn't speak to her." He says and I can hear the softness and sorrow in his voice.

"What? Why?" The mother asks. He's told me a couple times about how his mother is one of the biggest gossips with the rest of her friends in Monaco. He claims, 'she's just feeling alone and finds comfort other people's business ever since dad died'. And I understand her a hundred percent. She's who I'm gonna be when I grow up.

"That's none of our business, mom." He answers her with a slight chuckle but also an undertone of seriousness and stiffness.

"Okay, I get it." She backs out of this one respectfully. "But if she's already lost a parent does she really want to lose the other one too?" She adds.

I unconsciously shiver at those words and I sense he feels it as he thinks I'm getting cold and moves the blanket higher on me, covering me more properly.

"I— I don't know..." He sighs. "It's really her personal life, I don't want to meddle in when I've just gotten in." He adds. "Whatever she does I'll support her."

His mom hums. "I get what you mean, sweetie. But if you had the slightest chance to try and solve a relationship between a mother and her child, take it. There is nothing like a mother's love for her children." I wish it were true in my case. I guess it doesn't apply to everyone.

"That's it. I think she loved her second daughter too much. Far more than her..." He mumbles, hesitating with his words when they're actually the truth.

"It's a shame." She speaks and I agree. "I know I'd never want to break contact with any of you no matter what. Even if you kill somebody, I'd still visit you in jail."

He chuckles, "Thank you, mom. I appreciate it."

"Enjoy your day, sweetie." She lets him go

"You too, mom. Bye bye." He blows her a kiss and I can feel my stomach growing butterflies at the small action. It's literally the sweetest thing ever.
