I stayed huddled in the janitor's closet, feeling completely drained. I'd wiped away most of my tears, but my chest was still heavy, my mind still replaying my dad's message over and over. I needed to pull myself together, to get back out there, but my body refused to move.
Then, I heard a quiet knock on the door.
"Eva?" Felix's familiar voice broke the silence. I froze, holding my breath, hoping he'd just leave. But he didn't. "I know you're in there," he said softly, almost as if he was afraid to startle me. "Can I come in?"
After a moment, I nodded, realizing he couldn't see me. "Yeah...okay," I whispered, my voice barely audible.
The door creaked open, and Felix stepped inside, shutting it behind him. The closet was barely big enough for the two of us, and he had to crouch a little to fit. The dim light cast soft shadows across his face, making his usual warm expression look even gentler.
"Hey," he said, his voice low. "I was worried. You disappeared so suddenly."
I looked down, trying to find the right words. But there was nothing left in me. "I...I'm sorry. I just needed a minute."
Felix studied my face, and I could see the worry in his eyes. He leaned in closer, his voice barely above a whisper. "Eva, you don't have to go through this alone. You know that, right?"
I felt a pang of emotion in my chest, his words cutting right through me. I wanted to believe him, but after everything that had happened today, it was hard to feel anything but isolated. I forced a small, sad smile. "I'm not alone? Sure feels like it sometimes."
Felix's face softened, and he reached out, his hand gently brushing a stray tear from my cheek. His touch was warm, and I could feel my cheeks flush despite everything. "Eva, you're one of the strongest people I know," he said softly. "But being strong doesn't mean doing everything alone."
I looked up at him, meeting his gaze. His eyes were steady, filled with kindness, and I felt something shift inside me, a glimmer of warmth breaking through the cold. "It just...it gets really hard sometimes," I murmured, my voice barely holding together. "I don't know how much more I can take."
Felix didn't say anything for a moment. He just watched me, his expression unreadable. Then, without warning, he reached out and wrapped his arms around me, pulling me into a gentle hug. I stiffened at first, surprised, but then I melted into him, letting myself sink into the comfort of his embrace. It felt safe, like all the tension and pain I'd been holding onto could finally slip away, even if only for a moment.
"You don't have to talk about it," he whispered against my hair. "Just...know that I'm here. Whenever you need me."
I closed my eyes, breathing in the faint scent of his cologne, a mix of something warm and comforting. His heartbeat was steady against my cheek, grounding me, and I found myself relaxing in his arms, the walls I'd put up slowly crumbling.
