"Eva, how many points are you at?" Olivia asked, her voice curious.
To put things into perspective, let me explain the point system. As JYP trainees, we need to accumulate over 980 points to even have a chance at debuting. You get 20 points every time you manage an A+ in vocal lessons. Sounds easy, right? But trust me, it's anything but. Scoring even a C- is a feat on its own. The only trainee who managed to score a full 20 points was Han Jisung, and the second highest score was Kim Seungmin's 15 points.
Dance lessons give you 30 points for excelling, with the highest score being Leeknow's 25 points. And the points keep adding up for every other lesson and achievement, but they're all tough to come by.
"I'm at... 90," I sighed, feeling the weight of the numbers. It was already my 7th month as a trainee, and I was completely drained.
"That's still pretty good! I'm at 81," Olivia said, trying to encourage me.
Youngwoo chimed in, "Ah, excuse me ladies, but I'm at 54. What am I even supposed to do with that?"
She then lowered her voice, leaning in as if sharing a secret. "You know... Jun-pyo has been a trainee way longer than us, but he only just hit 100 points."
I gasped. "Is it really that hard? How am I supposed to debut at this rate?"
Olivia gave me a sympathetic look. "It's tough, I know. But remember, you're not alone. Everyone's struggling, even Jun-pyo. It's all part of the process. We just have to keep pushing."
Youngwoo nodded, but there was a glint of frustration in her eyes. "I mean, I get it, but sometimes it feels like we're stuck in this never-ending cycle. The more we try, the harder it gets."
I let out a deep breath. "I can't even imagine what it's like for those trainees who've been here for years... just to get to where we are now."
Olivia leaned back in her seat, trying to think of something encouraging. "Hey, the fact that you're even getting through this is impressive. It's not easy, and everyone has their own pace. Just because someone else is ahead doesn't mean you won't get there too."
I chuckled bitterly. "But we don't have that much time, Olivia. I can't keep going like this and still hope to debut."
Youngwoo's face softened. "You know... sometimes it's not all about the points. It's about showing them what you're capable of, even when the numbers don't match up."
I looked at her, unsure. "But how do we do that? How do we stand out when the system feels so... impossible?"
There was a long pause, and Olivia finally spoke. "By staying true to ourselves. By putting everything we have into what we love. We're all here for a reason. We're talented, even if the points don't always show it."
Youngwoo nodded, her voice quieter now. "And sometimes it's not just about the points. It's about the passion and the heart we put into it."
I stared at them both for a moment, their words sinking in. Maybe they were right. It wasn't going to be easy, but it was worth trying—fighting, not just for the points, but for what we wanted to achieve.
