I squealed and jumped around, texting my friends the exciting news. They flooded me with supportive messages, and I couldn't help doing a little happy dance—until I heard the front door open.
Okay, Eva, think. How are you going to convince him to let you go to Korea? He doesn't even let you go out with your friends.
I stepped out of my room and approached him. "Dad?"
"Whatever it is, make it quick."
"I... I got accepted into JYP—the company where big artists debut as idols," I said nervously. Before I could even finish, his hand struck me hard across the face. My heart sank, but I tried again. "Dad, it's in Korea, and—" His hand came down again, cutting me off mid-sentence.
"Dad—they accepted me as a trainee... which means, after training, I'll become an idol and earn a lot of money." His hand was raised to slap me again, but he froze when he heard the word "money."
I continued, seizing the moment. "I could send you on vacations to America, China, the Maldives... all of that! But only if I get to be a trainee. If not, well... my job as a cashier and salesgirl won't earn much," I added, letting my voice trail off, knowing he wouldn't like the thought of that.
