The Caretaker

Two years ago, Hope moved to a small island in British Colombia in Canada. She got the job cause her uncle Kol knew the owner of the island and he had told the owner she was looking for someone who could live there and take care of the place while they were not there, so he suggested Hope since she had finished her military contract and was now looking for a job.

He knew that this would fit her very well since she liked being alone and doing heavy work but the only thing his nieces were worried about was whether she could bring her dog Max with her since he too retired from his military service. The owner agreed to give her a chance and told her to bring her dog. When they finally met, the owner was amazed by the way Hope's work ethic, she was very handy with tools, she did finish everything that was on the list that she was given.

There were six guest houses, she permanently moved in after the week's trial and was given a generous monthly payment. The woman that owned the place was happy that at least the caretaker was a veteran and was very organized and could defend herself if someone had the idea to trespass the place.

One thing with the owner was that she would often fly home because she liked the peace and quiet. She was always accompanied by her older daughter Josie who was working remotely from her work office in the city.

Apparently, Josie was working as an editor, translator and web developer so she could do her work anywhere, but she never liked the big city. Her uncle told her that Josie did not like socializing and was very introverted with a light autism personality and it was very rare that she liked someone.

But apparently, she liked Hope because she was easy to speak to and she never made fun of her. The red head was always smiling at her and was genuinely listening to all her rumble and when Josie realized that she would quickly apologize but Hope always told her to stop apologizing for speaking what's on her mind and the big plus was Max loved the brunette and would always be by her side when she was home and Josie was happy to hang out with Max when she was there as well.

What Hope did not know was that Josie liked her more than a friend and she had spoken to her mother and sister about it.

Lizzie was the sister that would come with her mother and sister twice a year and the last time she was there was after Josie told her about her feelings for Hope and she really needed to know if the caretaker would hurt her sister or not.

Hope got up earlier than usual today because she was going to the mainland to pick up Josie around lunch time since she was coming alone for the first time. She finished her cup of coffee and picked up the grocery list that she had written over the weeks. She knew that today there would be a lot of shopping since she had not been in town for almost three months.

"You have to stay here because I'm going to get Josie and then we are going to do some shopping," she said as she looked at Max who just whined because he wanted to come with.

He stared at her with sad puppy eyes and was making a fake crying noise which Hope just laughed and shook her head. "Sargent Max, I know when you're fake crying so stop it, I need you to be a good boy and protect the island while I pick Josie up, so you have at least one more person to talk with"

Max just barked and gave her a happy smile and a low bark because he knew that one of his favorite people would come home since it had been a month the last time, they saw each other. Hope walked over to him and patted his little head as she gave him a hug and a kiss on his head, which he appreciated a lot.

"Okey, I got to go now, I see you in a few hours, okey boy?" she whispered and gave him a last kiss as they walked out of the door, and they jumped inside the ATV and drove to the landing strip that was built there decades ago. Max lay down on the seat as she gave him one last kiss and robbed his head and then took her backpack and entered the aircraft as started the engine and smiled at him before she took off.
