It had only been a few days since Jungwon and his international team submitted their year-long project. It should have been a moment of celebration, a sigh of relief.
Instead, anxiety hung over them like a storm cloud. The results were yet to be announced, and until then, they’d remain on edge, their futures uncertain.
Today, the five-member project team was summoned to the headmaster's office. The air in the room was thick with anticipation. Something about the meeting felt nerve-wracking, a sense of finality hanging in the balance.
If their project failed, they would be stuck in Japan for a few more months to get it right. But if it succeeded, they could finally go home, reunite with their families, and celebrate the New Year in their respective countries.
“The presentation you gave went exceptionally well. Congratulations!” The chairman said, smiling warmly at the group. “I called you here to share some good news. Your time in Japan is officially coming to an end!”
Jungwon and his teammates exchanged looks, the tension in their shoulders easing just a little. The chairman continued, “I’m deeply grateful to each of you for your contributions to this project. Your efforts will bring great success in the future.”
Relief washed over them, but it was brief.
The chairman wasn’t finished. “Your contract will last for another two weeks, so you have some decisions to make. You can leave early, but the cost of the tickets will be fully your responsibility. If you choose to stay until the contract officially ends, we will cover your expenses, including housing and some other necessities, but you won’t need to attend classes anymore.”
The team nodded in understanding, thankful that the burden of worry had finally lifted from their shoulders. Jungwon was relieved too. This was the first bit of good news he’d had in what felt like forever. They all thanked the chairman before leaving the office, but as soon as they stepped outside, the focus shifted.
The four others were already discussing plans for a celebratory dinner. They laughed, teasing each other, and talking about where they’d go.
But as they talked, Jungwon was distracted, his phone vibrating in his hand. He was texting someone, barely hearing the conversation around him.
“Jungwon? You in for dinner?” Mikael repeated, trying to catch his attention.
Jungwon glanced up, blinking in confusion before shaking his head apologetically. “Oh, sorry, I can’t. I’m meeting someone.”
His teammates exchanged knowing glances, and Yoongi couldn’t resist poking fun. “Ever since you became a ‘husband-to-be,’ you’ve been too busy for us.”
The others laughed. Everyone on the team knew about Jungwon’s sudden wedding, though none of them knew the details of who the bride was. They had heard rumors, of course, but Jungwon had kept things private.
“Shut up,” Jungwon shot back, his tone defensive. “This isn’t about her. We’re planning to cancel it, okay?”
Yoongi raised an eyebrow, still amused. “What is it about her that you don’t like, anyway?”
Jungwon adjusted his cap, pushing it backward in frustration. “Everything,” He muttered, shaking his head. “You wouldn’t understand.”
The mood shifted slightly when Mikael spoke up, his tone more serious. “Are you sure this isn’t about Jiyeon? You aren't still thinking about her?”
Jungwon’s jaw clenched at the mention of her name, his body tensing involuntarily. He forced a laugh, scoffing at the suggestion. “No way. Jiyeon’s in the past. I’m focused on my future now.”
