Charlotte held Engfa's cold body, and every last bit of hope seemed to vanish into thin air.
For a brief moment, all sensation faded. Engfa's mind was spinning, no longer clear. A deep chill emanated from within her, making her shiver. All she could do was try to grasp her phone, her hand trembling as she dialed Charlotte's number. But each movement grew harder, hazy, as though she were drifting into unconsciousness.
Engfa's voice emerged, choked and faint, as if each word dissolved into the air.
"Charlotte... I... I'm sorry..." She called out her name in agony.
Tears started to fall, each drop marking a deeper crack within her. It wasn't the physical pain but an overwhelming worry:
"I can't miss today... I'm so sorry, Charlotte..."
The world around her began to blur. She no longer cared about herself, her survival; she only worried that she couldn't be there for Charlotte. She couldn't deliver her proposal on her birthday, couldn't witness the joy and happiness she wanted to give her. Thoughts of the birthday cake she'd made, the promises, the memories, now seemed painfully distant, vanishing in an instant.
She whispered in her delirium, her voice weak, exhausted, but filled with love:
"You deserve everything, Charlotte... But why... why can't I be there with you..."
In her final moment, all Engfa could do was pray, hoping for a miracle that she could overcome the pain, that she could be by Charlotte's side, to witness her happiness on that special day.
In a café, Charlotte waited, her eyes scanning each passerby, but her heart only yearned for Engfa, hoping she'd arrive at any moment. Little did she know that fate was dealing a cruel blow to her beloved at that very moment.
Looking down at her phone, she saw a news report of a car accident. A red car had collided with a large truck, resulting in a fatality. Her hands shook, her eyes fixed on the screen. She couldn't believe it-the car in the video was the red one she had gifted Engfa on their anniversary. A deep sense of dread rose within her chest.
"No... it can't be..." she whispered, her heart shattering. Her vision blurred with tears as she struggled to accept this reality. Without another thought, she ran out of the café, her legs shaky, her heart racing with fear. She could only hope it was a mistake, that Engfa was merely injured, but deep down, she sensed something terrible was near.
When she arrived at the hospital, everything was in chaos. Her lips trembled, her steps heavy. The images of the accident replayed in her mind like a nightmare. Every second felt like an eternity as her gaze landed on a white hospital bed. And then, when she saw her, her heart almost stopped.
"Engfa..." she called, her voice hoarse, each word catching in her throat.
Charlotte's heart stopped as she entered the hospital room. The sight before her rooted her to the spot. Someone lay motionless on the bed, body lifeless, and blood still stained their face and limbs, making it impossible to recognize who they were. Desperation and pain surged in Charlotte's chest, crashing over her like a wave, wiping out any last hope.
She rushed forward, oblivious to everything around her, seeing only Engfa-her love-lying motionless, her injuries tearing Charlotte's heart to pieces. She couldn't believe her eyes, only sheer terror remained. Each step took all her strength, each breath caught in her throat.
"Fa, Fa..." Charlotte whispered, her voice breaking.
She sat down by the bed, clutching Engfa's hand tightly, her hands trembling. Tears fell freely, each drop breaking the silence of the room, like the cries of a soul that had lost its light.
