Chapter forty-three You Are It
Please, God, let it be me.
"You are it."
It seemed her wishes remained unheard. Maybe she'd used all her favors praying for Maggie's safety because Negan went past her, stopping right next to her, in front of Abraham. He was sitting up straight, unafraid while staring into his certain doom, just like she had known him.
"Anybody moves, anybody says anything, cut the boy's other eye out and feed it to his father. And then we'll start," Negan warned.
Abraham held up a peace sign. It was so small, yet so impactful. A signal for Sasha to tell her that everything was going to be okay and to say goodbye. Sasha's sobs made it clear that she got the message.
"You can breathe, you can cry. Hell, you're all gonna be doing that." Negan said, bringing down the bat on Abraham's skull. It didn't kill him, though. Abraham pushed himself up to look Negan in the eye like he'd barely been touched, even as the blood trickled down his forehead. "Woah, look at that, taking it like a champ!" Negan exclaimed.
Abraham only had three words for him. "Suck. My. Nuts."
Negan hit him again. And again. And again. He didn't stop, even if Abraham was already far gone. After the second hit, Alyssa couldn't do it. She couldn't look anymore. She knew if she did, she would break down sobbing. Abraham deserved more respect than that, but she couldn't do it. She stayed completely still, trying to ignore the noise of Abraham's skull being smashed into bits.
Alyssa's blinked her eyes open when she felt the blood splatter on the side of her face. The blood felt uncomfortably warm as it ran down in drops. The moment her vision became clear, she wished she'd never opened her eyes. Her stomach turned at the sight of Abraham's body and twisted even more at Negan's enjoyment.
"Did you hear that?" Negan laughed. "He said 'suck my nuts'!" Negan continued to hit the pulverized skull. It was just to draw out to moment a bit more, to really ground the sound in their heads for the rest of their lives, along with his agonizing laugh. "Oh my goodness, look at this! You guys, look at my dirty girl!"
Alyssa had thought there'd be no more tears left to cry after all they'd lost. She was wrong. She looked at Maggie because she didn't know what else to do. She was scared and she needed her mom. Her lip quivered and the blood on her face shined in the light of the moon, drawing Negan's attention to it.
"Oh, sweetheart, I'm sorry. Got a little blood on ya there." He smirked proudly and crouched down in front of her. "Let me get that," he said. He reached his gloved hand up and wiped at the red stain on her face, which only smeared it out. She didn't flinch, she didn't look at him. She pressed her nails deep into her palms.
"Well, I'm just making a mess here, aren't I?" Negan laughed and turned her head toward him, smearing blood on the other side of her face by doing so.
