DEV POV
As I hurried into the cabin, Aman greeted me with a harried expression. "There was a significant accident during the last Zar meeting. Many individuals were injured, and it's making headlines. Mukherjee is en route here," he informed me swiftly. Giving him a nod, I gestured for him to continue while I focused on the task at hand.
Glancing down at the Macron shareholders list, my mind kept wandering back to the previous night, remembering the softness of her lips and the natural ease between us. I shook my head to shake off the distraction; there were urgent matters that demanded my attention.
"He has arrived," Aman's announcement broke through my reverie, pulling me back to the impending confrontation.
As Mukherjee entered the room, his eyes flitted between Aman and me before he tentatively took a seat. Waste no time, I went straight to the heart of the matter, adopting a sharp and authoritative tone. "I will ensure your wife receives the necessary treatment. I understand you're in dire need of money, but if you disclose everything you know, I will guarantee your safety as well."
In this critical moment, there was no room for hesitation; this was a time to leverage the situation and make the most of it.
His voice quivered momentarily before he inquired, "You are genuinely committed to aiding my wife?"
I responded with a resolute nod, imparting the solace he fervently sought. What I sought was merely a clue, a solitary strand to untangle the intricate web of deceit enveloping Zar.
"Avyukt Khurana," he divulged, the timbre of his voice tinged with trepidation, "the owner of Zar. He is the individual whom you seek. His entanglement in the clandestine drug syndicate runs deep. During our previous encounter, he compelled me to disclose his identity to you under duress. My wife was held captive by him, I had no recourse. Moreover, he coerces me to distribute narcotics at his soirées."
His disclosures spilt forth, substantiating my prior apprehensions. Yet, a lingering question persisted, what could be Avyukt Khurana's rationale for directing Mukherjee to divulge his involvement to me? The puzzle defied logic. What concealed motive propelled Khurana to deliberately place himself in jeopardy?
As my mind was shrouded in uncertainty, I expressed my urgent inquiries, "What transpired yesterday? And what is his affiliation with Macron?"
Mukherjee shook his head, his trepidation palpable, yet he managed to speak with a hint of conviction. "I am oblivious to that. I am never granted access to the inner machinations, only the gatherings where they compel me to distribute the drugs."
It was another dead end. Frustration consumed me, but I dismissed Mukherjee with a wave, instructing Aman firmly to ensure his wife received the necessary treatment. I then shifted my focus, dialling Aman and directing, "Retrieve the shareholder's list of Zar Pharmaceuticals."
Without wasting a moment, I searched Avyukt Khurana. Predictably, he was a phantom in the corporate realm, eluding the limelight and evading public appearances. His Chief Operating Officer attended all the meetings, while Khurana operated clandestinely from the shadows. It was evident that this individual was meticulous, but why was his name so readily exposed?
Just as I began connecting the dots, my phone buzzed. I answered, only to be met with silence on the other end. Irritated, I spoke brusquely, "My time is precious, I do not have it to spare for juvenile pranks."
Just as I was about to end the call, a voice finally replied. "Dev Raichand... I have heard that you have been in search of me."
Khurana. His reputation certainly preceded him. The game was afoot.
