Aarohi POVMy blood boiled at his uncle's words. He was deliberately provoking Dev, trying to push him over the edge. I could see the game he was playing, but Dev was already caught in the grip of his emotions and anger. If I were in Dev's shoes, I might have lost control too. But something was unsettling about his uncle's tone-he seemed too focused on figuring out where the evidence was.
His focus on it was too sharp, too pointed. Was he trying to find out where it was? Or worse-was he planning to destroy it?
It dawned on me with chilling clarity: this wasn't just about provoking Dev. He was fishing for the one thing that could take him down. Dev's family deserved justice, and I couldn't let him reveal anything in his rage.
I had to stop him, to steer this before it was too late.
"Do you honestly believe we'd still keep the evidence in the mansion?" I interjected sharply, cutting through the tension with a deliberate tone. His uncle's eyes flickered, the faintest hint of panic crossing his face. He was desperate, fishing for any clue. I stole a glance at Dev, silently praying he'd catch the message I was sending. His eyes met mine, and with a subtle blink, he acknowledged the silent communication. He understood-just like he always did.
Dev turned back to his uncle, his composure returned, the wild anger replaced by a deadly calm. "Did you kill my father because he uncovered your drug dealings?" His voice was steady and cold-a man in control, no longer ruled by his rage.
The confession came with an air of frustration, almost bitterness. "Your father found out about my addiction," his uncle spat, the words heavy with regret. "He had his assistant gather evidence, and I begged him to destroy it. I swore I'd stop. But he wouldn't listen. He wanted to ruin me, to ruin my family. I had no choice."
I felt Dev tense beside me, the fury simmering beneath his calm exterior threatening to break through. Tightening my grip on his hand, I silently urged him to stay anchored, to not let this man manipulate him further.
Dev's eyes never left his uncle. His voice dropped, chillingly measured. "You'll pay for this," he said, his words cutting through the air like a blade. "Your entire family will pay."
Dev's uncle smirked, his arrogance wrapping around him like armor. "You think your threats hold any weight with me, Dev?" he sneered, dripping with disdain. "I lost everything the moment your father decided to ruin my life. Now, I'm untouchable. You can't destroy me-there's nothing left. But you?" He leaned forward slightly, his eyes gleaming with perverse satisfaction. "You don't have the spine to do what needs to be done. Your father didn't either."
Dev's grip tightened around my hand, his knuckles turning white. His body was a coil of barely contained rage, ready to spring at any moment. I could feel the storm brewing inside him, threatening to explode. Squeezing his hand harder, I silently pleaded with him to stay calm, to not let his uncle's poison get to him. We couldn't afford that right now.
"Now, you've got two choices," his uncle hissed, his voice low and menacing, like a snake coiling for a strike. "Run and save your family, or chase after the evidence. Tick-tock, Dev. They're already on their way to kill your family."
His words felt like ice sinking into my veins, dread clutching my chest. My heart hammered as the realization settled in-this wasn't just a sick game of control anymore. This was real. A death sentence was hanging over us, and time was slipping away.
I clutched Dev's arm, holding him back before he could do something reckless, panic swirling inside me. We couldn't lose anyone, not like this. "Dev, we have to go," I whispered, my voice shaky, but firm. There was no room for mistakes now. We needed to act-composed.
