Sarah and Mai met up with Detective Blaine at a quiet café on the outskirts of town. The sun was setting, casting a warm orange glow over the bustling streets.
"I've tried to contact John Kings, but he's refused to share any information with me," Detective Blaine said, frustration etched on his face. "I've been trying to get in touch with him for weeks, but he's not returning my calls."
Sarah and Mai exchanged a knowing glance. They had been investigating Juke's death for weeks, and every lead seemed to end in a dead-end.
"We've found something," Sarah said, pulling out the pictures. "These were in a package Juke left for Edith."
Detective Blaine's eyes widened as he took in the images. He leaned in closer, his eyes scanning every detail.
"I know what happened here," he said, his voice grim. "This is the old warehouse on 5th. There was a deliberate fire that happened...let me see..." He pulled out his phone and started typing. "Yes, it was about 8 years ago. There were some major injuries, but thankfully, no fatalities."
Mai's eyes narrowed. "But the building's been abandoned ever since?"
Detective Blaine nodded. "Yes, it's been a eyesore in the community. I've been trying to get the city to tear it down, but..." He trailed off, lost in thought.
Sarah's mind was racing. Something about the building seemed familiar. She had been to that warehouse before, but she couldn't quite place it.
And then it hit her.
"Wait," Sarah said, her voice shaking. "I know this building."
Mai and Detective Blaine turned to her.
"What do you mean?" Mai asked.
Sarah took a deep breath. "That's the building where Tamani was kidnapped and where I."
Detective Blaine's expression turned somber. "I heard about that case. It was a tragic accident."
Sarah's eyes welled up with tears. "I never thought I'd see that building again. But now...now I'm starting to piece together what happened."
Detective Blaine's eyes locked onto hers. "Sarah, I think it's time we got to the bottom of this. Let's get to work."
The three of them spent the next few hours pouring over the evidence, trying to connect the dots. They made phone calls, sent emails, and scoured the internet for any information they could find.
As the night wore on, the pieces started to fall into place. They discovered that the warehouse had been owned by a shell company, which was linked to a larger corporation.
"It's OmniCorp," Mai said, her eyes widening. "They're the ones who own the factory where Tom was investigating."
Sarah's eyes narrowed. "Now it makes sense why Grace and Juke are in that picture. Grace's family owns that company."
Detective Blaine nodded. "We need to get to the bottom of this. I'll get a warrant to search the warehouse and see if we can find any evidence."
After their discussion, Mai and Sarah left for home.
As Mai and Sarah arrived at Mai's house, they saw Blake sitting on the couch, looking troubled. His eyes were cast downward, and his brow was furrowed in concern.
Mai rushed towards him and hugged him tightly but Blake was not responding it was as though he was just a doll.
"Blake, what's wrong?" Mai asked.
Blake shook his head, refusing to meet their gaze. "Nothing, Mom. I'm fine."
Sarah's eyes narrowed. "Blake, we know something's wrong. Tell us what happened."
But Blake remained silent, his jaw clenched in determination.
Just as they were about to press Blake further, Sarah's phone rang. She answered, listening intently to the voice on the other end.
"Mai, it's Blaine," Sarah said, her voice low. "He says Jamin has handed himself in to the police."
Mai's eyes widened in shock. "What? Why?"
Sarah listened for a moment before responding. "He's claiming that he was the one who killed Juke."
Blake's head snapped up, his eyes wide with surprise.
"No, that wasn't the plan," Blake said, his voice shaking.
Mai's expression turned concerned. "Blake, what do you know?"
But before Blake could respond, Sarah interrupted. "We need to get to the police station. Now!"
As they rushed out of the house, Blake's words hung in the air. "Idiot! He didn't listen to me."
At the police station, they met with Martin, who filled them in on the details.
"Jamin came in about an hour ago, claiming that he was the one who killed Juke," Blaine said. "He's refusing to say why, but he's willing to cooperate fully with the investigation."
Sarah's eyes narrowed. "I don't believe it. Jamin wouldn't do something like that."
Mai's expression turned thoughtful. "But what if he's trying to protect someone?"
Blaine's eyes locked onto Mai's. "That's what I'm thinking. We need to get to the bottom of this."
Sarah began to worry. Why did Jamin say he was the one who killed him? Is he trying to protect someone? What happened to him? Is he trying to protect me?
