Jeez, so slippery...
Daisuke leaned on the rock wall, trying to avoid nearly falling for the third time in a row. He was now even more careful not to slip on the humid pebbles and, although he was going to this place more and more often lately, he still wasn't safe from an accident.
The cave he was in was only a few meters away from the campus where he was spending the summer, but the entrance was hidden by a curtain of thick leaves and the first steps were dangerous. So not a lot of people dared to explore it.
However, it contained a singular beauty, offered to those who were brave and courageous enough to discover it. Once past the sharp stalactites and cracked ground, it was possible to find a small lake, which reflected its bright cyan color on the dark rocks.
It was taking its source directly from the lagoon and therefore a lot of legends were told about it. The most known was the one of a mermaid dragging their human lover into the depths to turn them into one of their own, and be together forever.
Daisuke absolutely didn't believe in those fishy stories that were most likely to be invented by humans themselves for their own interest or other shitty purpose. He did believe in mermaids though, since he was about to see one soon in this same cave.
He reached the lake without any scratches (unlike the other times which was a progress) and sat right on the edge. The water was calmly flowing, almost inviting, and nothing seemed abnormal, at least in appearance.
It was about to change as a mystic creature would come quicker than you expected. Daisuke gave three blows in the clear water, which resounded in a pure sound and waited. The signal took several seconds to arrive at its receiver, then Daisuke was able to perceive a form moving in the lake.
It slowly approached closer, like a mysterious shadow sliding between others, almost like a predator tracking its prey. But it suddenly disappeared for an instant, for who knew what reason, before jumping out of the water to pull Daisuke into a hug.
"Easy Ray, you're wet !" He chuckled. "I don't wanna get soaked like a fish please."
"Right, sorry. I was just happy to see you."
Ray broke away from the hug, fins brushing Daisuke's skin and smiled at him, revealing his pointy teeth. He was a shark merboy and the prince of the Northern Waters. Just like those of his kind, he could control the water and lived in the lagoon with other mermaids.
The two completely met by chance. When Daisuke desperately tried to escape from another student party, he took refuge on one of the many wooden piers around the campus by the water, and found Ray, a mermaid a little too curious about him.
Funny to also mention that Daisuke actually fell from that dock, tripping from wondering who was staring at him. Ray kind of saved him there and that was their first encounter. They saw each other again after, then again, until feelings became more serious between them.
Ray could technically live on earth with Daisuke, but he still had to wait for a moon before that. Although he already mastered his human form, marine creatures had really strict rules about this. So he couldn't, and that was why they were hanging out secretly, patiently waiting.
"I got something for you." Ray said, ears excitedly wiggling.
"Lemme guess, sea shells ?"
"Hm-hm."
"Show them to me."
Ray gave a powerful tail blow and dived to rapidly emerge again, arms full of shells. He dropped them off next to Daisuke, who looked at them closely. They were a rainbow of pearly color, of different sizes and shapes, all unique in their own way.
