I stood in the tidy kitchen, when mouse came in "can I have a word please?" I raised an eyebrow, he looked at me, summer and Alex began to listen in "I swear to god, if you open, one more milk carton, when there's already a carton open, I'm going to stab you" "we are this close to the edge...over a milk?" "Yes it's a buildup, you just don't listen to me!I've asked you so many times and it's really winding me up" he looked at me "well...I'm sorry" he went to walk towards me "anything else?" "Why do- okay sometimes you do help me, sometimes you do put your dirty clothes in the washing basket, and I'm grateful for that, but why, occasionally, do you leave it near the basket? You need to put it in the basket to help me why would you sometimes not help me, put it near the basket?" He looked at me, as did the kids "because I'm throwing it in" I heard sniggers from the kids "sometimes I miss" "well, why don't you go back and pick it up?" "I do, I often go back and pick it up, then I try again, sometimes I'll do that for half an hour...." I took a breath as I moved an empty biscuit packet towards him "do you know that sometimes when you finish of YOUR packet of biscuits, why....WHY do you put the empty biscuit packet back in the cupboard?" "I didn't think you knew that was me" "well who else is it going to be? They're your biscuits! And will you please, and Michael, I've literally, I know that I, for a fact asked you this 100,000 times since we've been together, please will you put your plate in the dishwasher and not next to it? Because next to it, I know you think you're helping okay Michael but you're not, because it gets cleaned when it's in it, not next to it, you might as well put it in the friggin garden, for Sunday lunch do a put the meat next to the oven? NO I PUT IT IN IT! The only thing you clean in this house on a regular basis, is your internet history and it's disgusting" he glared at the the kids before walking over to me "okay, you're nervous, I get it, go grab your bag it's time to go, let's go a bit earlier and I'll buy you a gingerbread latte okay?" He rubbed both my arms "okay!" I smiled nervously and grabbed my handbag.
We sat in the room, "okay Charlie, if you'd like to lay down and tuck your legs to your chest, you're going to feel some cold spray on the base of your back, you can hold onto Michael's hand if you wish" he doctor smiled kindly as I did as I was told, mouse came around and went to his knees in front of me, he took my shaking hands and kissed the back of them, I felt the needle go in and be wiggled around, the pain was so bad, a tear rolled over the bridge of my nose and onto the paper laid out on the bed, mouse took out a tissue from his pocket and wiped it away softly, "it's okay, it's nearly over" he kissed my nose as I closed my eyes.
It was over, they bandaged me up, gave me a cup of tea, a few biscuits and sent us in our way, mouse had hold of my hand as we made our way through the hospital, "I know...I've already had one bu-" "gingerbread latte with cream and sprinkles? Want a gingerbread too?" I smiled at him as he sat me down carefully and went to get the order. He came back shortly with takeaway cups and two different biscuits "whichever biscuit you don't want, I'll eat" "I'll have the shortbread please" "great! That gingerbread woman was shouting out to me!" He sat down opposite me and began to eat his biscuit, I just picked around it "hey Hun you okay?" "Yeah I'm fine, I'm just tired" "let go home then, I can drive and you can chill" he jumped up and helped me up carefully, the pain in my back was intense.
Mouse had laid me on the sofa, tucked me up in a blanket and supplied me with soup and coffee, he had to go back to work, so he made sure I had everything, TV remote, my DVD box sets, every single phone on the house in case in his words "any of them malfunction" these were the phones that had been working brilliantly for nearly a year...so I was home alone, watching my DVDs when Alex walked into the room "hey babes" "hey mum...we can we talk?" I looked up from the TV "yeah...sure!" I smiled at him weakly as he sat next to me gently, "how's your back?" "Bloody painful" I smiled "come on what's eating you up?" He took a box from his pocket "I'm going to propose to Carrie" he swallowed as he looked at me "mum..." He encouraged me to speak "do you love her?" "I've loved her since I was 5...mum she's the one" "then go for it Hun, you're perfect for each other!...can I see the ring?" He opened the box, "I've been saving most of the year" he rubbed the back of his neck "it's beautiful..." The ring was silver, with a heart shaped diamond in the middle, and a butterfly either side "she has a thing for butterflies..she loves the colours and how elegant they are" "How you going to do it?" I passed the box back to him "Well she loves, and I don't want to put things on you, but she loves your singing" "I'm not serenading her" "no mum! I want you and uncle Jensen to sing a song, so I can put it on a video as the background whilst I do the scene from her favourite film love actually" I smiled at him "Great idea have you asked uncle Jensen?" "Not yet but I will! I just had to ask you first" "well you have my blessing or whatever, maybe you could film the video and we could go to the cinema? Show it there" "brilliant!" "God you don't take after your father..." I laughed as I tried to pull myself up a little bit "ha why? How did he propose?" "The first time...it was on Christmas Day, with 20 baubles and 20 of my favourite flowers" "that's romantic!" "That one wasn't his idea..." I raised my eyebrows "his idea, was to propose on a cold park bench when I was about to marry someone else..." "Whoa.." "Yep....whoa".
That night mouse had carried me up to bed "Alex is going to propose to Carrie" I then continued to fill him in "wow he came up with that on his own?" "Yeah...doesn't get his romance from you eh" I smiled at him "I'm very romantic!" "Oh yeah cuz proposing on a cold park bench when I'm about to get married to someone else I'd DEAD romantic!" I grinned at him "well I think it was, and hey you'd be with a Lincoln sminkoln if I hadn't have interrupted "this is very true" I kissed him gently "thanks for today" "no problem how you feeling?" "Like shit, but hopefully the pressure has gone, and the migraines will stop" "my fingers and toes are crossed!" He kissed me back before laying down with me and turning off the light.
