I'd eventually gone back home, Mouse had had enough of me, I knew that, he knew that, and whip knew that, he tired taking me out, to give mouse a break if anything, I'd been a bitch and I knew I had.
Laid in bed on a Saturday morning I could hear mouse downstairs on the phone "I can't do this anymore" he must've been doing something, whoever was in the other end was on loud speaker "of course you can Michael! Stop being a dick"
"Whip....this is not the woman I married.." "of course it isn't you dumbass, and I'm pretty sure you're not the same man she married either!" "She's so depressed..." "she's going to be....what did you expect her to still be her happy and joyful self when she's now stuck in a wheelchair, not being able to feel her legs....not being able to walk with her grandkids, able to surf in the water that she grew up in, mouse image that been taken away from you...." "I just don't know if I can do this..." "what, so that's it? Everything you've been through? You're jut gonna throw it away?!" "If she'd had listened to me in the first place! She wouldn't be in this mess!" There was a silence.... "whip you still there?" "I don't know you anymore....everything, she supported you with, all your stupid mistakes, all your great achievements she's been there....she wanted her old firefighting job back and she was happy...but your couldn't support her, the one she needed the support of most...didn't...." "I can't do this, I'll talk later I think she's awake" he hung up the phone as I heard him deep sigh, walking up the stairs. He met me half way up, I'd managed to drag my arse out of the bed, get dressed and down the stairs, with difficulty but I'd get there eventually "Charlie-" "I'm fine" I went down another step "you all right?" "I'm fine, not like you care anyway" down another step as Michael went backwards "we're going out" "no, you go out, and with the conversation you just had with whip, take your suitcase with you" he looked at me and swallowed "yup....I heard" "were going out" he swooped in and picked me up, it's not like he had much of a fight on his hands...
Michael pushed me along the prom, in this stupid wheelchair that he'd plonked me in, everyone started staring at me, "you okay?" "I'm fine" "fine? That's good, several 'fines' since we left the house, could I have another word please?" "Arsehole? There's another word?" He stopped pushing "I think I liked 'fine' better" he began to push again, as he eventually got to the beach, he went to push me on the sand "Michael stop" I held onto the wheels to stop them moving burning my hands in the process "Charlie you've hurt your hands here let me plaster the-" "MICHAEL STOP, JUST stop" he looked at me "I've had enough" "Charlie-" "get me out of this seat" mouse picked me up from the chair bridal style, "now what?" "Take me to the sea and leave me there....please" "charlie I can't you'll drown" I looked at him "Charlie" "give me a float then" "no, I'm taking you up to the tower" he put me back in the chair and pushed, I couldn't do a thing, the wheels had burnt my hands, my legs didn't work...
We arrived in the tower, maxi came running toward me, I could see his face drop at the sight of me "hey you!" He tried to be cheerful "hey" "you okay?" "She's 'fine' right?" Mouse looked at me "twat" I rolled my eyes as whip came over and stopped in his tracks "Charlie?!" "Whip" "how you-" "answer for me again....I'm gonna knock you out" I looked at Mouse who tutted loudly before walking outside, whip waited until he'd gone "how you doing?" "Fine" "how you really doing?" Jesse and maxi sat down opposite me "like shit...." I shrugged "I look like a bag of bones, my legs are numb, and my husband is leaving me" "leaving you?!" Maxi gasped in shock "god you heard all that?" Whip rubbed my arms "yup" I smiled sadly as a tear rolled down my cheek "what is wrong with him?!" Jesse stood up in anger "me....I'm wrong with him, I've been an utter bitch" "but understandably" "he blames me for the accident...if I hadn't have taken that job he...it wouldn't have happened..." "Charlie...." "whip....do me a favour?" "Sure...anything" "will you carry me down to the sea? Please?" "Sure..I'll take you down in rhino" "thank you" he smiled as he picked me up carefully "god you're so light" "it's the fad diet...weight loss by wheelchair" I raised an eyebrow as he placed me in the seat next to him.
"Right....here's the sea" he took me out and placed me on the sand, the water washed around me "Charlie wha-" "can you just....leave me hear a sec...just alone for a minute please..." "sure...give us a ring if you need anything" he kissed the top of my head before asking away and getting back in rhino.
I sat there, the water upto my waste, feeling the rush around my stomach and sighed contently, I had no idea where mouse was, frankly I didn't care, as I closed my eyes someone tapped on my shoulder, maxi stood there with a young boy, must've been 12 maybe 13 "sorry to bother you Charlie, I just, this young man here asked for you and well, being as you're here today I thought I'd bring him over, I looked at the hopeful boy, "who's this then?" I smiled at them "this is Freddy...and he has something to say" "give me a second" I hauled myself back, further onto the sand so the young man could sit next to me, he walked forward, sat down and smiled "this is for you" he handed me a single red rose "now that is beautiful!" "I love you...so much..." "Oh I don't think I deserve that!" "You're so brave...you'll walk again soon Charlie...I just know it" he threw his arms around me tightly "fingers crossed huh buddy" I ruffled his hair as he got up and ran back to the lifeguard tower "see....people don't think bad of your Char....they can see through the bitch act you've got with mouse" "I just...hate the fact that he blames me...for this...and he used to look at me, with such love in his eyes and now, it's just a cold, hard stare...." "we'll knock some sense into him...don't worry about that, but for now, the lads are playing Christmas music in the tower, and drinks are beginning to be poured...go get sloshed!" Maxi picked me up and carried me up to the tower.
