The evening was lively, the soft hum of chatter mingling with the clinking of glasses and distant music.
You walked into the grand venue holding YeJoon in your arms, his tiny hands clutching the folds of your blue gown as he rested his head on your shoulder.
Taehyung walked beside you, his hand resting protectively on the small of your back. Together, you looked like a picture-perfect family, drawing the attention of many.
Taehyung's parents approached you almost immediately, their faces lighting up as they saw the three of you.
"Y/N," his mother said warmly, pulling you into a gentle hug. "You look stunning tonight. This gown suits you so well."
"Thank you," you replied softly, your cheeks flushing under the compliment. "Taehyung picked it."
His father chuckled. "It seems our son finally has good taste," he teased, earning a playful glare from Taehyung.
"YeJoon, come to Grandpa," his father cooed, holding his arms out. YeJoon hesitated but eventually let himself be taken, his small face scrunching slightly at the unfamiliarity of the bustling crowd.
"You've been doing such a wonderful job with him," Taehyung's mother said, her voice filled with affection. "We couldn't have asked for a better daughter-in-law."
Your heart swelled at her words, and you smiled. "Thank you. He's a blessing in my life."
As the night went on, you introduced YeJoon to relatives, gently coaxing him to interact with people despite his shyness. Taehyung remained by your side, his reassuring presence a constant. However, after some time, he excused himself to meet a businessman he had spotted across the room.
"I'll be back soon," he whispered, giving your hand a light squeeze before walking away.
You nodded, shifting your focus back to YeJoon, who was growing more curious about the lively surroundings. Just as you were about to make your way to the buffet table, a voice stopped you in your tracks.
"Y/N," came a sharp, familiar tone.
Turning, you found Taehyung's aunt standing before you, her expression unreadable but her eyes assessing you. You offered her a polite smile. "Good evening, Auntie. It's nice to see you."
Her lips curled into a thin, mocking smile. "Is it? I wasn't sure if you'd be able to face us all, considering... everything."
You tilted your head slightly, maintaining your composure. "I hope you're enjoying the evening."
She raised an eyebrow, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Oh, I am. But I can't help but wonder how someone like you manages to fit in here. It must be hard, stealing your sister's husband and taking her place."
Her words struck you like a slap, but you forced yourself to remain calm. "Auntie, I—"
"Don't try to justify it," she interrupted, her tone biting. "You must feel proud, though, taking over her life like this. First, you become YeJoon's 'mother,' and now you're parading around as Taehyung's wife. Does it not bother you that you're living the life she should have had?"
Your throat tightened, and you glanced down at YeJoon, who was beginning to stir uncomfortably in your arms. "Auntie, I understand your feelings, but—"
"No, you don't," she snapped. "You'll never understand what it means to lose someone like Aera. You didn't just lose a sister—you stole from her. Her husband. Her son. You're nothing more than a replacement, and you'll never be good enough to truly fill her shoes."
Her words cut deeper than you expected, and tears pricked your eyes. But for YeJoon's sake, you held them back. "I'm sorry if my presence offends you," you said quietly, your voice steady despite the storm of emotions inside you. "I've only ever tried to do my best for YeJoon and Taehyung. They are my family now, and I love them."
