Evie turned to Musa, her expression determined. "I will figure this out; we're in the perfect place for it. A Chinese home is bound to document rare shadow residue left behind by dark creatures. I went to history class with Lonnie. The Mogwai—yes, that's it; I think there are four maybe six types.
"First, you have the air types. They have wings and sport skin that can be red, blue, or yellow. Then there are the earth-traversing ones, which possess fire powers. Those are the extremely tall beings, marked by a moon symbol between their eyes.
"Next up are the rain demons—the most dangerous of all. When rain brings forth good, the pure rain or fresh water enables them to multiply; they mate with their copies and reproduce. The only person who has fought off and maintained dark magic as strong as this is Mal's mother, Maleficent. Maybe that's why Maleficent has the title of Mistress of Evil—it's because she serves as a failsafe guardian against the power-hungry beings of hell. Hellish magic requires hellish security to repel it. She and Mal are failsafe fairies," Evie stated, a realization dawning on her. "Her mother was attacked long before the Isle was established. Mal repelled and destroyed it when she gave her mother her love two years ago."
"Eurgh, stop meddling in things you don't understand. You're just a fashionista!" the Shadow Residue grumbled out loud, irritated.
"You wish!" Evie shot back, her eyes blazing with determination. "I'm not letting Musa struggle with this alone. I've seen your air type before—it was a picture in the underworld, Mogwai! The Dark Prince, he was called in a history book. I'm glad I kept this handy. His wings were burnt off by the River Styx, right? Head of animal and scarlet bright head skin, huh?"
"Clever," a voice intruded, rich with menace. "My accidental conjurer didn't know how to wield this part of his magic and wasn't aware it existed until he learned it in this world. He paid you a visit—watched a satisfying, mistakenly named dark fairy save an ungrateful world of humans. You won't beat me. Your out-of-this-world fairy friend doesn't have roots or connections yet in this world."
"You're wrong!" Evie declared defiantly. "I'm not an advocate for breaking the majority of the rules, but this one needs it. Magic Mirror in my hand, shine forth bright light!" She held up her enchanted mirror in front of the shadow. It emitted a brilliant light from within the glass, bathing the room in a radiant glow. Her eyes bulged in shock when the glass reflected familiar shapes—Flora and Aisha literally stepped out, emerging as if born from the very essence of the mirror.
"We're here to help! We're part of Musa's old friends from her world. I think, between the three of us, we make quite the Assertive Gals' Trio!" Flora declared, her voice imbued with a sense of camaraderie.
"Let's get to business," Aisha responded, her tone authoritative. "Evie, go tell Lonnie and Mulan to take Musa with you! We'll hold them off!"
Evie quickly slid her mother's magic mirror into her pocket and tucked the book into her satchel, resolutely taking Musa by the hand as the figures of her fairy friends began to shimmer with magic.
"Whatever you do, Evie, remember—no one besides Mal can physically hold her mother's scepter without the curse keeping the Mogwai within them manipulated onto them."
"Maleficent's scepter is under a curse?" Musa asked, surprised and concerned.
"Good people say 'curse'; it's a protection spell," Evie explained, her voice hurried as they edged toward the door. "Shortly before Mal and I became friends, we found the scepter on the Isle. Mal nearly made me pick it up, only to rebuke me at the last second. She said her mother cursed it to protect its lethal power from falling into the wrong hands. Anyone not joined to her bloodline would fall asleep—just like Aurora—for a hundred years! My dad insists there's a Mogwai in there; she personally defeated it. He claims it's a feminine version—she could twist the magic to become a permanent death."
With urgency, Evie and Musa rushed out of the room, sealing the door behind them.
Meanwhile, the air crackled with tension as the room was alive with chaos. Flora and Aisha prepared to confront the shadow residue, the spectral forms of Flora and Aisha hovering protectively before the Mogwai man silhouette, dark and menacing.
"Yikes, sounds like it's really hectic in there already!" Musa cringed, her heart racing at the cacophony of destruction within the room—what sounded like window curtains tearing and glass vases shattering against the walls.
"Pathetic!" the Mogwai sneered, its voice dripping with contempt. "Do you think you can stop me? I was born from despair, and it runs through my veins! You are merely reflections; you have no real power!"
"Just wait!" Flora interjected, stepping forward, her presence emboldened by the bright light from Evie's mirror. She focused on the Mogwai, channeling her magic. "We have something you don't—friendship and support! Together, we can fight this darkness!"
Aisha joined in, her own energy blending with Flora's. "Let us show you the strength of unity!"
The Mogwai recoiled slightly, the shadows curling defensively around it, and its frustration boiled over. "You think words can save you? I'll devour your hope!"
As it lunged forward, Flora and Aisha linked hands, forming a protective barrier of light between it and their friends. The room flashed brightly as they unleashed their joint magic, illuminating the space with a shimmering glow.
"Your darkness cannot overshadow our light!" Aisha shouted, their combined energy pushing against the relentless shadows.
The battle raged on, resonating with echoes of power and the clash of light against darkness. Musa and the others stood outside, waiting anxiously as the sounds of the fight unfolded, the intensity of the air thick with both fear and determination.
