Mal paced in her royal castle bedroom, her hand on Athena's necklace feather pendant, being the daughter of a God, at least one Aunt of her family actually liked her enough to try to protect her, just like her boyfriend and the boys she had as friends. There was a thing Mal learnt through all her struggles that was a positive because she wasn't confident as the rest, she didn't bear any weight of overconfidence that would self-destruct herself.
Jane knocked quietly on the door. "Come in," Mal said, sitting up in her bed, looking at the hand-woven fans Ben had made her on his last few visits to Minglania. His love is true and genuine, and no drama or disasters would be able to break the bond he already feels. Genuine true love is stronger than any spell mankind and their kin could create. Looking at each of these gifts, a happy feeling swells in her heart. The portrait of her in the purple gown is an extreme symbol of how much he loves her.
"He wouldn't have given you all these gifts if he didn't love you truly so well, Mal. This well outweighs the love even Belle, his mother, was given by the Beast when she first met him."
"I know, but his parents, especially his Father, would say a loving wife also knows how to safely protect her loving husband. And fear of villains is still so strong here, and I'm still the daughter of villains." A wave of sadness washes over Mal as she considers the deep-seated prejudice she still faces, a constant reminder of her lineage.
"Old scars internally take centuries to heal completely, Mal. That's smart you thinking about Ben's safety too. You wanted to talk about Evie, didn't you?" The weight of unspoken worries hangs in the air, a melancholy echo of friendships strained and paths diverging.
"You noticed?! It is like you almost swapped places with her and she waltzed into a fancier world where I just don't belong–let alone fit in. Feels like she's left me behind in favor of her fashion career." A pang of loneliness strikes Mal's heart as she grapples with the shifting dynamics of her friendship with Evie.
"She's blind to her overconfidence like Musa is. Ben said he's coming home tomorrow with Lonnie, Evie and Musa. Musa requested to be involved in their next fighting demonstration today with Lonnie's parents."
"Wow, really?!" gasped Mal. "That's a surprise. Musa told me she didn't like fighting herself or even watching it. But Evie sure loves watching it, the art of the movements have always been as big a drive of hers as were the movements of dancing."
"At least you don't struggle to remember your origin roots, Mal, I like you because of that," Jane says, her voice a soft lament, a quiet testament to her own internal battles. She clings to the familiarity Mal offers, a grounding force amidst the swirling anxieties of Auradon Prep. The echoes of the Isle of the Lost, a place Jane has never known, somehow resonate within her, a strange source of comfort. "Being able to be here in your presence even though you are paranoid like every other A. K. S. students except me makes me feel sanely normal when you talk about your Isle of the Lost roots."
Mal listens, a weariness etched upon her face, a faint echo of battles fought and demons subdued. "There were plenty of people on the isle of the Lost Jane who grew up as shy as unwanted as you." She understands the yearning for normalcy, the desperation to find solace in shared experiences. "I am not surprised I make you feel normal. I like you as a friend; a friend I really needed. You made me realize it was normal to make mistakes and let thoughts carry you and me off into no man's land." Her words are carefully chosen, a delicate dance around the sensitive terrain of Jane's past.
Jane's gaze drops, shame a heavy weight upon her shoulders. "I never should have said that about you. You were the first one to not shoo me away, to treat me politely." The memory of past transgressions stings, a reminder of the pain she inflicted, fueled by insecurity and a desperate need for acceptance. "Audrey was a terrible influence on me. I don't know what I was thinking that day. I just wanted to be noticed I think not popular. But even then I didn't see clearly you had already noticed me."
A shadow crosses Mal's features, a flicker of understanding and perhaps a touch of bitterness. "I think that is Evie's way of aligning her priorities; she doesn't realize her fashion career makes her popular unlike me. The hair I gave you was drawing you into the popular crowd with that spell." The unintended consequences of her actions weigh heavily, a reminder that even with the best intentions, magic can be a dangerous tool. "I am sorry it led to so much pain for you. All I want is for paranoia to stop before I get sick from all my stressed out feelings, Jane. You've apologized enough to me about that picnic incident Jane. One apology is more than enough accepted."
"I'm sorry, Mal, but I owe my pleasant life here finally to you without I wouldn't have it at all," Jane states, her voice thick with emotion, her eyes pleading for absolution. The debt she feels is immense, a burden she carries with her every day. "I don't think I could ever stop apologizing for the weight you took off my shoulders when you first came here, Mal. Let me help you with your burdens; I do have a debt to repay. If there's anything, you know I can handle arranging let me do it, please Mal. I will apologize 7 x 70 times regardless. For this friendship wasn't bought by gold. It was forged on common ground."
A glimmer of hope flickers in Jane's eyes, a fragile belief in the power of friendship to heal and to endure. "We're on the same page, Mal. You aren't on this road alone, anymore. We'll face it together; I promise." The words are spoken with conviction, a vow to stand by Mal, to share her burdens, to navigate the treacherous path ahead as one.
She clasps her hands around Mal's cuff of her sleeve a gesture taught to European kids in a world that didn't exist with these fantasy beings was a strong sign of trust in each other. This was their version of the Earthworld. Jane's eyes were genuinely teary with remorse towards Mal herself. It was the same tears Mal had after winning the fight against her Mother when she went to explain to Jane's mother what happened. Those weren't tears of joy but sadness and if you listened really close you would hear guilt cracking through her voice when Mal spoke to Fairy Godmother about the issue Jane was having because of her. (1st Movie watching Mal's apology and confession to the Fairy Godmother; this is the very first and only time Mal's voice really cracks with guilt when defending Jane._Lumna10)
