I felt as if the entire world had come crashing down upon me when I heard Maani distressedly utter that she was bleeding.
"Maani, please hand the phone to Rabia bhabhi", I pleaded, my grip tightening around the device.
Tears streamed down my cheeks, and I struggled to suppress the sobs threatening to escape from my trembling lips.
"Sab...sab so rahe hain, chachu", he reiterated, his words swirling around me like a disorienting fog and causing my brows to knit together in confusion.
"Kya matlab so rahe hain?", I snapped, unable to mask the anger in my voice as I pulled the phone away from my ear and glanced at the screen.
The time was just seven-thirty; surely no one would be asleep this early under normal circumstances. Something was undeniably off.
Without further hesitation, I turned the key in the ignition and revved up the cars engine with a roar that reverberated through the night air.
Nothing will happen to her, I know it. I will not let anything harm her; my duty is to protect her at all costs. She is mine, my sweet little wifey.
How could I possibly allow any harm to come her way?
Taking a deep breath to steady myself, I spoke into the phone with urgency. "Maani, can you tell me where she's bleeding from?" It was then that I veered left into the narrow alley just two minutes from her house.
"Its around her chest", he exclaimed, his voice breaking, under the weight of panic. "The blood....it won't stop!" His small frame trembled as he voiced his fear, and the fear in his tone pulled at my heartstrings, drawing tears from my eyes.
The pain in his plea for her to wake up intensified the ache within me.
As I pulled the car up near the house, my heart was pounding so loudly I could hear it in my ears. I practically stumbled out of the car, my legs struggling to keep up with the urgency and anxiety coursing through my body.
As I rushed into the house, the silence and emptiness hit me like a ton of bricks. I could feel my steps slow down as I made my way into the living room, my shoes clicking on the floor as if to remind me of the urgency of the situation. And they were there, my family, scattered around the room in uneven positions, all fast asleep.
But there was no sign of her grandparents or her mother. My heart sank as I ran upstairs to her room, my legs shaking with every step. I couldn't bear the thought of seeing her in pain or covered in her own blood.
It would kill me to see her like that.
And then I saw it, her bedroom door was opened. I placed my hand on the door to support and my heart stopped as I saw Maani, straddled on her body, pleading and crying for her to wake up. The sight of her bloody lifeless body made me let out a choked sob.
I forced my shaky legs to walk towards them, my whole body trembling with fear and worry. As I got closer, I could hear Maani's sobs and I could see the fear and desperation in his eyes.
It was breaking my heart.
Her room was dark and suffocatingly quiet, just like my life without her. She was my light, my reason for living. And now, without her, my life felt colorless and empty.
I couldn't imagine a world without her.
As I stood there, watching Maani cry over her lifeless body, I couldn't help but feel like a part of me had died too.
She was my everything and without her, there was no me.
