I got up from the bed and walked near the window. I stood there for a while after just waking up from the nap. The nap calmed my nerves, especially after the events that happened in the university. I couldn't believe baba suggested I should marry Shabbir to unite two families.
It was truly shocking and heart breaking to realise that he is still only focused on his own family and not his daughter. Can a person truly be more selfish than this? It's disheartening that baba only seems to care about his damn family, neglecting the needs and feelings of his own daughter or the life she deserves.
But why should I listen to him now? He wasn't there when I needed him in my life. My father was living his life with his new family when I needed him. I use to see other children of my age in school getting dropped off by their father's, but mine was absent. I felt lonely and hated myself for not having my father around.
Iam torn between marrying Shabbir to unite two families and following my heart's desires. The decision is weighing heavily on me as I do not want to hurt Shahmeer, who has developed feelings for me. The thought of history repeating itself, with baba loving ammi and eventually leaving her, is terrifying. Their love marriage ended in heartbreak, and I fear the same fate.
"I'll leave every thing on Allah, he will decide what is best for me", I mumbled as i turned around and walked out of the room, making my way downstairs. Trusting in his plan, I felt a sense of peace.
As I descended the stairs, I let out a yawn and rubbed my tired eyes. The sound of voices drew me towards the dining area, where I entered singing a random song. My eyes landed on Shahmeer and his family, who were all seated and staring at me. Feeling a bit embarrassed, I chuckled sheepishly and scratched my neck.
"Assalamualaikum", I greeted.
"Walaikumassalam", they greeted back as I walked and sat beside Mishi at the table.
"Wahhh, bhabhi aap toh lata mangeshakar se kam nahi", Harris said with a smile on his face, making me glare at him in playfully.
"Sachi yaar aapki awaaz boht pyaari hai", Ibrahim said as he drank water from his glass.
I felt even more embarrassed as they repeated it, wishing the earth would swallow me. Biting my lips, I glanced at Shahmeer, who was smiling at me. His beautiful smile could brighten up anyone's day. I returned his smile, and took the rice plate and poured some onto my own. Adding curry from the khorma bowl to the white rice, I began eating. Thoughts raced through my mind - were they here because ammi called them, or did they have something to discuss?
"Umm, now that she is here, I wanted to suggest that we have a simple nikkah ceremony tomorrow and a grand walima in the village", Shahmeer's mother said with a smile. This made me stop eating and look at ammi, awaiting her response.
"Itni jaldi, kal nahi ho sakta. There are so many preparations to be done", ammi said looking at nana and nani, waiting for there response on this matter.
"What do we need preparations for, we just want our daughter in our home", she said casually as she took a spoonful of her food. I glanced at Shahmeer, noticing a nervous smile on his face as he met my gaze.
"Main aap se wada karti hun ke main aap ki beti ko bahu nahi, apni beti ki tarah rakhungi, bas aap raazi hojaye, nikah ke liye", she said glancing at everyone.
I sat there, twirling the spoon in my hand, as they discussed about my marriage in front of me. A mix of happiness and embarrassment washed over me. Harris, Ibrahim and their brother's wore teasing smiles, causing me to feel shy. Mishi expressed doubt about the timing, stating, "but it's too early, don't you think?". Shahmeer's mother disagreed, saying, "I don't think so, naik kaam main deri nahi honi chahiye", I observed her and Shahmeer exchanging meaningful glances.
Ibrahim announced with a beaming smile, "so, we have decided that they are getting married tomorrow", Harris eagerly exclaimed, "oh god, I can't wait to have you at home, bhabhi", as he playfully wiggled his brows while looking at me and Shahmeer.
"So, we will be having a simple nikkah ceremony tomorrow, and the walima will be held in the village after two days", his mother said caressing his cheeks in a loving manner. It seems shahmeer is a mama's boy. I gulp my saliva as she stands up from the table proclaiming,"toh hum kal apni beti ko lene aa rhe hai", I dread the impending kiss and hug as she approaches me, pecking my head. 'Oh god, not this now, I think to myself.
Tomorrow, Iam getting married, and the thought of it makes me feel nervous and scared. I will be moving into a new home, surrounded by unfamiliar faces, and I will have to share my bed with a man, which is quite frightening.
