I laid in my bed, my mind wandered to what Shabbir had said about meeting at the university today. But honestly, I had no interest in seeing him. I knew my day would go downhill if I met him.
I shrugged off the thought and got out of bed, grabbing a blue jeans, white kurta and scarf from my closet. I took a warm shower and blowdried my hair, leaving it down but keeping a scrunchy handy just in case.
With my backpack on, I made my way down the stairs to the dining area where my aunt, mama and grandparents were enjoying their morning chai.
"Assalamualaikum", I greeted them and poured myself a cup of chai. Mishi noticed me and I signaled for her to come over.
"Umm, Shabbir said he'll come to the university today", I told her as we walked into the garden.
"Let him come, but don't talk to him", she warned.
"But he said he wants to talk", I replied, feeling anxious at the thought.
My life is finally going well, I don't want him to complicate things, I thought to myself as I took a sip of my chai.
*********
Mishi had just dropped me off at the university, and I was now sitting with Aiman who was munching on imlie. I couldn't help but think to myself, this girl is so weird. I mean, who eats imlie this early in the morning?
"Do you want some?", Aiman asked, her tongue licking the tamarind spoon.
"No, thank you", I replied, scrolling through my phone. Just then, I felt a thud on my chair. I looked up to see my cousin Asifa standing there with a mischivieous smirk on her face.
"Assalamualaikum, bhabhi", she greeted me while playing with her hair. I rolled my eyes and gave her a bored expression. But Asifa didn't seem to care as she snatched my phone from my hand and said. "Bhai is calling you. He's outside".
I stood up, glaring at her. "Don't you dare snatch my phone from my hand like that again", I warned her.
"Come on, just go. Bhai is waiting for you", Asifa huffed, rolling her eyes. It was clear that she didn't understand that I had no interest in talking to her bhai.
"Don't disturb me", I retorted, annoyed with her constant interruptions.
Asifa confronted me with furious eyes, "You, my dear bhabhi, are the epitome of brat",
I couldn't help but chuckle at her statement. "And you, my dear, are a delightful piece of sunshine". I said with a sarcastic smile.
Enraged, she retorted, "How dare you speak to me like that!". Before she could lay her hand on me, I swiftly grabbed her hand and gave her a taste of her own medicine with a sharp slap on her cheek. The whole class erupted into laughter at the sight of the mighty Asifa getting slapped.
As she retreated to her seat, she threatened me, "You'll regret this".
I simply shrugged, "oh, please. I regret nothing, except maybe not having popcorn to enjoy this drama".
Just then, our them professor walked in and Asifa took her seat. But not before whispering. "I'll make sure you pay for this".
I couldn't resist a sassy comeback, "oh, I'll be sure to write that down in my diary of things I don't care about". The class erupted once again, and I couldn't help but revel in the glory of always being the one to shut Asifa up.
