Asiya Suleiman (Minha's mother)
****************
My daughter's future is now being impacted by something, I did in the past that I wish I had never met and had lived the life my parents had envisioned.
I regret having previously married into a political family, but I promise not to do it to my daughter because I want to provide her with a better life than I did.
"I don't know what to do ammi" I cried placing my head in her lap.
"I know what to do" I turned to face my mother as she replied, stroking my hair.
I immediately sat up straight, staring at her for the response as she adjusted her specs to face me.
"A week ago, I was informed by uzair's mother that her sister is seeking a marriage proposal for her son. If you think it would be suitable, we can discuss it further" said ammi tucking my hair behind my ear.
"All i want is for my daughter to have a happy life" I said looking at ammi.
While we both were engrossed in talking mishi barged into the room and sat at the corner of the bed facing me and ammi.
"Minha, is not opening the door" said mishi sitting in crossed leg position.
"She won't open the door now, I know" I said sobbing.
She share the same behavior as her father, who use to shut himself in a room and isolate himself from the outer world, whenever someone tried to hurt his feelings or while having a break down. They both are same.
"Aapi, aapi" mishi's voice startled me.
"Aapi rona band kre yaar", she said wiping my tears.
I nod my head at her and wiped my tears. Ya Allah mujhe sabr de.
"Main toh btana hi bhul gayi, woh uzair bhai ki ammi neeche living room hai, keh rahi thi ke aap dono se kuch zaroori baat krni h", she said looking at us.
"Ok", I replied getting out of bed to head downstairs to the living room.
"Assalamualaikum", I said to the woman seated on the couch in my living room. This woman is my mother's best friend. She has watched me grow up knows everything about me and including shahnawaz.
"Walaikumasalam", she said getting up giving me a hug.
As we sat down on the couch, ammi and mishi came into the room and took seats across from me.
Four of us sat in perfect stillness, staring into each other's faces to begin the conversation.
"Ahhemm", shaheen khala's clearing throat make me turn my head towards her.
"Let's get straight to the point" said khala as she gaze at ammi who nods her head in response.
"My sister is seeking a marriage proposal for her son if you find it good we can discuss directly about the engagement ceremony, and Minha will be a perfect match for her son" she said a smile on her face.
"Engagement, don't you think it would have been better if the boy's mother come and talk about it?" questioned ammi.
"Hmm, meri behen ne hi mujhe yaha bheja h, keh rahi thi ke use hamari Meenu boht pasand aayi h", she replied.
"Tumhe pata h na aaj kya hua tha yaha", ammi said with a sad face. See everyone is sad because of me, I'm the reason behind everybody's sorrow.
"Haan, I know the so called political family was here", she said rolling her eyes.
"But, let's not talk about them, it's waste of our time, my sister is here for few days with her family", she said looking at me.
"And it would be better if we do the engagement ceremony, with in a week", she asked raising her eyebrows.
My tongue is tied, I can't decide it on my own. I once did what I wanted and I regret it to this day. I don't want to do anything own my own this time since its my daughter's life at stake, so I have to be extremely careful. I just stared at ammi and mishi, who were both looking at me for the answer.
"Let's talk about it with Minha first, then we'll let you know", stated mishi looking at khala.
I want the best for my daughter and don't want her to end up like me, so please, Allah, help me and don't leave me alone. Help me make the correct decision for my daughter.
