What we are exploring: What are the shortcomings of the analytical approach and the advantages of synthesis in treating eating disorders?

What's new: What did you discover new for you in each book, and why do you think it is important?

What we will learn: How do we assemble the puzzle of "self-love" and how important is it?

1. In modern philosophy, especially Anglo-American, the analytical approach is known to prevail. ... But analytical philosophy, as a rule, does not reach a synthesis, stopping at the stage of dismembering the whole and neglecting its recreation from parts (Epstein M.N. 2019) [1].

2. Since the time of Descartes and the Renaissance, science, including medicine, has taken a special path in the analytical assessment of the natural world. This approach can be described as "divide and conquer," and is based on the assumption that complex problems can be solved by dividing them into smaller, simpler, and therefore more tractable tasks (An E. S., et al., 2006) [2].

3. Synthesis (from the Greek synthesis – connection, combination) – the combination of diverse phenomena, things, qualities, opposites, or contradictory sets into a unity in which contradictions and oppositions are smoothed out or removed. The opposite concept is analysis. The result of synthesis is a completely new formation, the properties of which are not only the external sum of the properties of the components but also the result of their interpenetration and mutual influence. Therefore, true synthesis is not an aggregate, but a "creative synthesis" (W. Wundt) (Schmidt G., 2003) [3].

4. Inadequacy of the analytical approach. The above quotations from scientists highlight the shortcomings of the analytical approach in science, especially in medicine. They point out that excessive division of complex problems into separate, smaller components can lead to a loss of the holistic picture and make it difficult to find effective solutions. Dividing the problem of obesity and eating disorders into separate components (nutrition, physical activity, psychopathology, etc.) does not allow us to see the full picture and find effective solutions. Therefore, the book you are reading is only one of five parts aimed at solving the problem of unhealthy weight.

5. The need for synthesis. The famous scientist Wilhelm Wundt spoke of "creative synthesis" - the unification of different elements into a single whole, where all parts interact and complement each other. This principle can be applied to our health. For successful treatment it is necessary to combine the various aspects of the problem into a single whole, creating a comprehensive approach that takes into account five key factors: physiological, psychological, aesthetic, dietary, and the practice of self-love.
