Chapter 6- Lucky shot
*Cat's POV*
I decide to cut through the park as, well it's better than just walking along plain old pavements. My shopping bag bounces against my legs as I walk which is rather annoying. I am actually so pleased to have got away from my mums house, I know she is my mum and I should be happy to spend some time with her on my birthday but I'm not. She still thinks I'm 13 not 31...hold on, no, I'm 32; I have to get used to that! God why do we have to be marked numbers? They don't tell you anything really, they are just a count down until...oh god listen to me! I need to lighten up! It's my birthday and here I am going on about death! Umm what do people do to ‘lighten up’? Umm whistle? No…I can’t whistle…what else?
I end up being so busy trying to ‘lighten up’ I almost walk straight into a bench. As I try and regain my balance and my dignity, I spot something. Over in a corner, hidden in shade is a group stood with their backs to me, but I can see something is wrong. I am almost certain some are being restrained and…oh my god is that a knife? Suddenly I realise who it is, a bald man, a tall guy and the other; oh god its Danny, Mark and Glen! I watch, frozen to the spot. That’s when I see Autumn, a tall dark-haired man with a knife to her throat. I see the dark-haired man signal towards Danny and he is shoved to his knees by the blonde guy holding him and I know what will come next. But suddenly I lose my focus as there is a thud and something hard knocks into the back of my head.
“Soz miss!” A boy yells from the field to my left where they are playing football. Suddenly I have an idea; I grab the ball and place it in front of my foot.
“Ok, umm what was it Mr Carter used to say? Umm…other than I couldn’t play football to save my life…damn…ok, 3, 2, 1.” I close my eyes and swing my foot forwards yelping slightly as my foot collides with it; these really aren’t the right sort of shoes to be playing football in. I take a deep breath and open my eyes expecting the worst. But when I do I see the blonde guy sprawled on his back on top of Danny, a football rolling casually away from his head.
*Danny’s POV*
Everything is spinning, my head is pounding like a terrible hangover and I can hardly focus. But I have to, I know I do. As quickly as I can I haul myself out from under the body that is crushing me and run at the other Dan holding Autumn. I swing a punch and he is so busy trying to keep hold of Autumn he doesn’t have time to move. He falls to the floor unconscious and Autumn shies away, terrified and holding her throat. I can hear Mark and Glen beginning to struggle more with their captors and then the sound of someone running, calling my name.
“Danny! Danny run!” I hear a voice call and I turn to see Cat racing towards me.
“Was…?” I begin pointing at her.
“Not now Dan! Just run!” Cat yells.
“She right! We will catch you up when we have finished with this lot! Get Autumn out of here!” Mark yells as he catches a guy in the face with his elbow. Then I feel a hand grab my arm and I am being pulled away.
*Cat’s POV*
I pull Danny and Autumn along the back alleys trying to get as far away from the park as possible before circling around the long way to Danny’s house so that- if anyone was following us- hopefully they would lose us. Finally I push the other two against the wall on the other side of the street from Dan’s house as I peer around the corner making sure we haven’t been followed. When I am happy we aren’t being stalked I lean against the wall, panting.
“That was to close for comfort.” I say between breaths. When I have caught my breath enough to speak again I turn to Danny with a smile. “So, how does it feel to be saved by a girl?” I ask but then I see his face, he has gone pale and looks as if he is about to faint. “Danny? What’s wrong?” I ask, suddenly extremely concerned.
“I’m fine, just a little…dizzy.” He says leaning on the wall, his eyes closed breathing deeply.
“Dan what is it?” I ask as he doubles over, a hand on his stomach.
“I’m gonna be sick.” He says and I bend down in front of him.
“Danny how many fingers am I holding up?” I ask putting up two fingers.
“Four?” Danny says and I bite my lip. Then I notice the redness appearing through his hair.
“Ok, right we need to get you inside.” I say standing up. Great; this is the last thing I need!
*Marks POV*
When I am satisfied that all the men are all out cold and will experience some nasty headaches and bruising I turn to Glen grinning.
“You enjoyed that didn’t you?” Glen says.
“And you didn’t?” I say and he grins.
“Come on, we need to find the others.” Glen says.
“Did you see what happened? Was that Cat? With the football?” I say and Glen shrugs.
“Looks like it, but I thought she was crap at football?”
“Yeh…maybe it was just a lucky shot.” I say
“A very lucky shot.” Glen says before he beings walking, “Come on, before they start to worry.” Glen says and after taking one more look around…and kicking a guy in the stomach…I follow him.
*Cat’s POV*
I am just about to lead Danny across the road when I hear a sound, footsteps. I freeze as I hear the footsteps get slower as they approach. I can hear the heavy breathing from just around the corner. I am just about to poke my head around when two figures almost knock me over. I scream…they scream…we all scream, well apart from Danny who throws up right onto Marks shoes.
“Eugh! Dan!” Mark cries grimacing.
“God don’t creep up on people like that! You almost gave me a heart attack!” I say before Danny practically collapses on me only just still conscious.
“Dan?” Glen says suddenly sounding extremely worried.
“He hit his head.” I explain.
“Why is he like…that though?”
“Concussion, quite bad concussion. That’s the only problem I can think of.” I say.
“I beg to differ.” Mark says looking down at his shoes.
“Oh shut up.” Glen mumbles taking Danny’s arm.
“Easy for you to say you don’t have the remains of Dan’s breakfast on your new shoes!” Mark moans.
“Mark shut up about the fucking shoes!” I snap.
“Ok, ok.” Mark says taking Danny’s other arm and helping Glen carry him inside. “You’re so paying for new ones though mate.” I hear Mark say to Danny.
“Mark?” Danny mumbles. “Fuck off.” I smile; maybe he isn’t that bad after all. Then I remember Autumn, stood cowering against the wall.
“Come on, you will be safe now I promise.” I whisper and she ever so slowly begins to follow me in, that strange three legged dog hoping beside her. I sigh, I get the feeling life is about to get a whole lot more interesting.
