Chapter 4 – The Man of Miracles
I explain as quickly as possible before their minds can create too many horrible reasons and they just sit and stare at me. I don’t know how they will react, but waiting to find out is killing me. Finally, Mark speaks.
“So, what are we going to do?” He asks. “Call the police?” I shake my head.
“No, we don’t know what her situation is, that might make it worse.”
“What if she…maybe she is running from the police.” Glen says gazing at my bedroom door as if he is trying to see her through the wood. I want to tell him not to be so stupid but I can’t because a part of me knows he could be right.
“Ok, so if were not calling the police then what are we doing?” Mark asks.
“Well, she can stay here at mine and we will try and find out what’s going on and then try to help her.” I say and slowly the others mutter their agreement. “Good, ok you wait here and I will see if I can get her to come out.” I say before getting up and going to my room.
Inside I find a pile of music sheets, lyrics and all sorts of papers on the floor and Autumn curled up in the corner, a copy of The Man Who Can’t Be Moved in her hand.
“You like music?” I ask but she stays silent, shuffling back, pressing herself into the corner. I crouch down in front of her and look into her terrified eyes; then I begin to sing. "Going back to the corner where I first saw you, Gonna camp in my sleeping bag I'm not gonna move" I sing softly and slowly I see her body begin to relax. "Got some words on cardboard, got your picture in my hand, saying if you see this girl can you tell her where I am?” I sing before ever so slowly reaching forwards towards her hand. She instinctively pulls away at my touch but as I continue she begin to relax more. "Some try to hand me money, they don't understand. I'm not broke I'm just a broken hearted man. I know it makes no sense but what else can I do, how can I move on when I'm still in love with you?" I sing as my fingers wrap gently around her hand. "'Cause if one day you wake up and find that you're missing me, and your heart starts to wonder where on this earth I could be." Ever so slowly I begin to lead her over to the door and out into the living room. "Thinkin maybe you'll come back here to the place that we'd meet. And you'll see me waiting for you on the corner of the street.” I sing and suddenly there is another sound, a guitar. I smile as I hear Mark strumming out the cords and I keep singing and guiding Autumn in. Once in the room I let her hand slip from my grasp and she quickly pulls it to her and pushes up against the wall. I move over to the piano and begin to play. Glen begins to tap out the beat on the sofa arm and I lose myself in the music.
"I'm not gonna move..." I sing letting the final note ring out as all sound fades from the room. I open my eyes and turn to see Autumn has slid down the wall but she is not trying to press herself into it, not trying to make herself as small as possible. She is sat staring at us, her green eyes wide and intrigued. She gazes at the piano, at my guitar in Mark’s hand (which I really wish he would put down...I don't like people holding Caroline...yes my guitars have names...don't judge!) A small smile flickers over my face and I slowly go over and sit about two feet in front of her.
"I don't think we were ever properly introduced. I'm Danny and that's Mark and Glen." I say and they both smile and Glen gives her a little wave making the corners of her lips rise slightly. "Now Autumn, there is something very important you need to know. I don't know who you are running from or why but I do know that I will protect you; I won’t let anyone harm you, ok? But please, trust me. Help me to help you." I say but she just keeps staring at me with those shinning green eyes. They are very beautiful, deep sea green and they seem to sparkle in the light. But there is something odd, something is there but then at the same time not there at all. I sort of feel I can see her soul shinning in them, but then part for me feels I can see nothing at all. Her eyes are just a mirror, reflecting the souls of others, but why? Because she doesn’t have one of her own? Or has it just been buried so deep within her and locked away for safe keeping? Suddenly there is someone by my side breaking me from my thoughts,
“Hey, sweetheart, what’s this?” Glen whispers softly reaching towards her. For a moment she pulls back but Glen just smiles as he pulls a small hand full of sweets from behind her ear. She stares at them for a moment as if she is studying them. “They are sweets, called Millions. Go on, they are nice.” Glen says and ever so slowly she takes one and quickly pops it in her mouth. She looks at us, her eyes like that of a puppy,
“Dublin Park.” She whispers. I don’t really understand but I try and make it look like I do.
“Do you want to go now?” Glen asks and she nods slowly. “Come on then.” He whispers before holding out a hand to her and to my surprise she takes it. They walk out of the door, Glen being careful to go slowly so as not to make her feel rushed, leaving Mark and I looking after them in wonder.
“Glen Power, the man of miracles.” Mark says with a smile.
“Yeh.” I say still trying to get my head around why I seem to be the only one this girl refuses to trust.
“Come on then, let’s go to the park!” Mark says with a grin before we hurry off after Glen and Autumn wondering what the hell will happen next in the strange world I seem to have walked into.
