Chapter 3 – What now?
After borrowing some clean clothes for Autumn from my neighbour Cat setting about do something normal; making pancakes. The smell takes me back to my childhood on Shrove Tuesdays, sitting and watching my mum cooking them before my dad tried to flip them, my brothers and sisters all fighting to get the first one.
Cat flips the pancake expertly and I see Autumn watching intently, her eyes as wide as teaspoons until she sees me watching and buries her head in her arms. Cat slowly approaches her and hands her the plate. She hesitates for a while before sniffing it and I turn to my own pancake. Cat takes a seat at the small table in my kitchen and I go to join her. I put my plate down before going rummaging through the cupboards looking for fillings. “Eugh Danny! 1. Its breakfast and 2. That’s disgusting!” Cat says as I fill the pancake with a variety of things including sugar, maple syrup and ice cream.
“What? It’s lovely! And I have had a stressful few hours ok! I haven’t eaten all day and it’s almost 12!” I protest and she sighs, grimacing as I take a bite. It really does taste like heaven; all the flavours swirl around my mouth making my taste buds go into overdrive.
“Oh, I’m gonna be sick!” Cat says screwing up her face in disgusted and turning away.
“What?!” I ask grinning as maple syrup makes its way down my chin.
“God Dan who old are you? 5?” She says with a sigh as she cleans away the plates. I grin and wipe the syrup from my face before getting up and going into the sitting room to find Autumn in the same position curled up in the sofa but her plate is on the table completely licked clean. I smile and take it back to the kitchen where we discuss what we are going to do.
“I can’t put her back on the streets, there is something; someone is chasing her I am sure. I don’t know why but when she heard those footsteps she was terrified.” I say sitting on the work surfaces swinging my legs like a child.
“But she can’t really stay here. And my flat is even smaller and I have nightshifts later this week at the hospital.” Cat says as she washes up.
“No, she can stay here. I think my sofa is a sofa bed…I just don’t know how it works. But she will have a bed to sleep in at least.” I say until I see the unsure look on Cat’s face. “What is it?”
“Well, she is obviously a very damaged girl. She needs looking after.” Cat says slowly.
“And you think I can’t look after her?” I ask slightly offended.
“Dan she is scared to death, hasn’t it accrued to you she is much more scared of you than me?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, I think she is scared of men.” Cat says looking up from the washing up.
“I see, well then I will help her.” I say as I reach out to take a plate from Cat. Suddenly there is a sharp pain in my hand and I drop the plate to the floor where it smashes. I look down at my hand and see the plaster has come off. Cat stares at it before glaring at me.
“Dan! First aid kit! Now!” She says sternly.
“Yes mother.” I sulk before fetching it.
“Ow!” I cry as Cat removes a shard of glass from my hand with tweezers.
“Oh don’t be such a baby.” She says before pressing an antiseptic wipe on my cut.
“Ow, ow, ow! Fuck that stings!”
“Oh be quiet. There now that wasn’t that bad was it?” She says wrapping a small bandage round my hand. “Right now I am seeing my mother in half an hour so I should probably get going.” Cat says getting to her feet.
“Umm, yeh sure.” I say suddenly panicking about being left alone to look after this girl.
“I will see you later though ok.” She says and I smile.
“Sure, Happy Birthday Cat.” I say as I kiss her on the cheek. She smiles.
“Thanks, see you.” She says picking up her bag and turning towards the door. “Bye Autumn.” She calls softly but Autumn makes no move. “Bye.” She says before closing the door. Great, umm what the hell do I do now?
“My hands are cold, my body's numb
I'm still in shock, what have you done?
My head is pounding, my vision's blurred
Your mouth is moving, I don't hear a word”
I sing as I play my piano, eyes closed letting the music flow through me. When I finish the song I open my eyes and I can see her reflected in the mirror. For once she doesn’t seem to be hiding, she isn’t pressed far back into the sofa, she is sat watching me, a hint of a smile on her lips. I am just about to continue when there is a knock on my door.
“Danny?! Are you in there!? Open up!” I hear Mark call, what are they doing here? I look back to Autumn and see she has retreated back into the sofa again. I need to let them in but it will scare her to death.
“Autumn, go in there, you will be safe I promise.” I say pointing towards my room. She stays put for a moment but when Mark knocks again she scrambles to her feet and rushes off towards my room.
“Danny!?” Glen calls.
“Ok, ok I’m coming! God, keep your hair on!” I call.
“Bit too late for that with Mark.” Glen chuckles as I open the door and they push straight into my flat.
“Is there a reason for this visit or did you just decide to come and try and break my door down.” I ask as they make themselves at home as they usually do.
“Is there a reason you haven’t been answering your phone?” Mark asks as he takes a seat.
“My phone?” I say trying to work out what he means, my phone hasn’t gone off.
“Yes Dan, your phone, you know the thing people call you on?” Mark says.
“Oh! Damn! Yeh sorry, it’s out of battery, sorry I forgot.” I say and they sigh.
“No surprise there then.” Glen mutters.
“So then, is there a reason you are here?” I ask but before they can answer there is a crash and a squeal from my room.
“What was that?” Mark asks.
“Umm, mice?” I say clutches desperately at straws.
“Mice?” Glen asks raising his eyebrows.
“Very big ones?” I say and Glen gets to his feet.
“Come on Dan! What poor girl have you got trapped in there?” He says with a smirk.
“Glen no!” I say but it’s too late, he has already opened the door and entered my room. A few seconds later he backs out closing the door behind him before turning to me, a look of shock and confusion on his face.
“Danny, would please care to explain why there is a strange terrified girl in your bedroom?”
