Chapter 9- Science and Faith
*Danny’s POV*
My eyes flicker open as Saturday dawns and I have only just realised something; what are we going to do with Autumn while we are at Cat’s party? I highly doubt she will want to be there, but then I can’t leave her here alone, can I? God this must be what it’s like having young children! You can’t do anything without having to think about them first. But then I guess normally people get babysitters but…well somehow I don’t think that would go down well. Suddenly my phone goes crazy and Mark’s voice is blaring out of it. “Daniel John Mark Luke O’Donoghue get your lazy arse out of that fucking bed right now you lazy bastard!” It screams and I groan; I knew I should never have let Mark set my alarm tone. I pull myself off the sofa bed (which I admit I had to get Mark to show me how to use) as I have let Autumn continue sleeping in my bed, not least because Cassidy has been sleeping there too and even after a bath who knows what sort of things that dog is carrying.
I make myself a cup of tea and rummage through the cupboards till I find something edible that I can make sure will still be edible after I have prepared it. When I have finished eating I make myself yet another cup of tea and lean back in my chair. Autumn and I have been getting on a lot better, she doesn’t seem to be as scared of me and she is really starting to relax. I am letting her get used to me fully before I try and push any information. She needs time to really trust me but I think that time is getting shorter, I know it’s only been a week but she really is becoming my life. I feel protective of her, almost like a father. I have discovered she is intrigued by music, especially when I play. She sits and watches, her eyes studying my every move. I would love to hear her sing, just to hear what she sounds like. She hardly speaks at all and when she does she never says more than a whisper. I can tell she wants to sing, to play, to dance along, but she is holding herself back out of fear, but I am determined to change this, music shouldn’t be hidden away inside you, if I did that…well, I would go insane.
Just then the doorbell rings and I pull myself out of the chair and go to open it.
“Hey Dan.” Cat says cheerily as I open to door.
“Hey.” I say but my voice is nowhere near as cheery, well what do you expect? It’s 8am and I am tired!
“Nice outfit.” She smirks, walking in as I realise I am still in my dressing gown.
“Tea?” I ask and she nods enthusiastically.
“Do you really need to ask?” She says with a smile and I put the kettle on. “So, what are we going to do then?” She asks and I smile.
“Wait and see.” I say.
“Or you could just tell me?” She says. “Come on, pretty please?” She says fluttering her eyelashes and putting on her sweetest face which I must say is hard to say no to but I manage it. She folds her arms and puts on a pouting face.
“Take this to Autumn will you?” I ask shoving the tray into her hands before she can argue.
“Yes Sir.” She mumbles before leaving the room. The kettle boils and I make Cat her tea before setting about on the washing up which is something I haven’t done in a while. “You? Washing up? Since when?” Cat’s voice asks from behind me before she jumps up onto the work surface next to the sink. “Since me and the dishwasher had an argument.” I say and she smiles.
“You had an argument with a machine?”
“Well…it sat there stubbornly while I yelled abuse…” I say slowly and Cat smiles. "I don't think it likes me." I say, putting on a sad voice.
"Aww didums" She says grinning.
"Enough with the sarcasm missy." I say tapping her nose and leaving a blob of bubbles on the end of it.
