Chapter 7 – This is Love
*Glen’s POV*
“Lay him on the sofa.” Cat instructs as she hurries to find a first aid kit. We do as she says and soon she has pulled up a chair and is rummaging through the box. “I will need some warm water and a clean cloth.” She says not lifting her gaze.
“Yes m’am!” Mark says saluting mockingly before we begin to raid Danny’s cupboards.
When we finally find the many things Cat keeps barking at us we all gather around Danny watching anxiously.
“Ouch, that’s gotta hurt.” I whisper as I get a good look at Dan’s head. There is a gash just past his hair line and its bleeding quite badly.
“It’s not too bad. I have seen worse.” Cat says as she begins to clean the wound. “He will be alright in the morning, he just needs to rest.” Cat says as she continues to work as Mark and I watch over her. “And I, surprisingly, need to breath!” She says after a few minutes.
“Oh…right.” We say, slowly shuffling off looking around awkwardly. That’s when I notice I can’t see Autumn. I begin to look around and soon I notice the bathroom door is slightly ajar. I slowly poke my head around the door and that’s when I spot her, curled up under the sink crying, Cassidy nuzzling her affectionately in an effort to comfort her.
“Hey sweetheart, don’t cry.” It’s strange, she doesn’t cry like most children. She is sat there shaking, a few tears rolling down her face but making no sound. Suddenly I remember something, ‘Children cry because they want attention; ‘cause they're hurt or afraid. When they cry silently it's 'cause they just can't stop.’ Hold on wasn’t that in Doctor Who? I am 32 and quoting Doctor Who? Well I guess there are worse things to could quote…much worse.
I slowly go over and crouch down next to her. “Who were they Autumn?” I ask. Cassidy pushes her head onto Autumn’s knees and Autumn wraps her arms around her neck hugging her.
“My brother- Dan, and his friends.” She whispers into Cassidy’s fur. So her brother did all this to her…her brother called Dan.
“Autumn? Do you not trust Danny as much because of his name?” I ask and she buries her face as if in shame. “Autumn?” Slowly she nods her head and I sigh. “You shouldn’t you know, of all the people to be scared of Danny really is not one of them. He is a big softy. It’s like spiders; they are probably more scared of you than you are of them.” I tell her and slowly she lifts her head.
“Danny, gets scared?” She says.
“God yeh! Do you want to know what he’s really scared of? Pigeons, they scare him to death!” I say and she smiles slightly.
“I didn’t think men got scared.” She whispers
“Everyone gets scared Autumn, if we didn’t we would be fools.” I tell her and she seems to contemplate this for a while.
“What are you scared of?” She asks looking up at me with wide eyes.
“Heights; I really don’t do heights.” I say and she considers this.
“I am scared.” Autumn says quietly.
“What are you scared of?” I ask softly. She looks up at me, her face looking as if she is trying to do a complicated sum in her head. Finally, she answers.
“I am just scared.”
*Cat’s POV*
Later that evening Mark and Glen have both gone home telling me to text them if Danny gets any better, or worse. Glen helped Autumn to sleep in Danny’s bed and so I am left sat by Danny who is still sprawled out on the sofa. I think he will be ok but I want to stay with him anyway. I am sat in a chair by the edge of the sofa, the only light coming from a dim lamp near the piano, the only other sound the quiet ticking of the clock as the hands creep closer to midnight.
“Well, that wasn’t really how I imagined spending my birthday.” I say to Danny, smiling at how cute he looks when asleep. “But you know what, it was better than any fancy restaurant. I mean, I was scared, but the adrenaline, it…I don’t know, it was fun, exciting. I was very scared though, I thought that…well I thought he was going to kill you.” I say, I don’t know why I am saying all this, nobody can hear me.
“When you’re on tour Danny; well, I miss you, I miss you so much. I just have your music, ‘There’d be a smile on my face and the kettle on and it would be like you were never gone, there’d be a light in the hall and a key under the mat if you ever come back.’ Those words, all the words, I think it’s the only way I can cope. When you aren’t here it almost feels as if a part of me is missing that is only returned to me when you are. When you run to greet me, when you call my name, when you hug me; suddenly all the waiting seems worth it just to have the feeling I get when you return. But today I think it really hit me, I knew if you went this time you would not come back, you would be lost for ever and so would I. I think…I think that made me realise how much I need you. I would do anything to keep you safe, I know that sounds cheesy but it’s true. Oh god why am I saying this? You don’t need me, you have the world, you have everything, of course you don’t need me, who would? I think the more I need you the less you need me; and that’s the thing isn’t it, it always seems to be that way.” I look down at Danny’s sleeping form and smile slightly; it’s funny how I finally find words when there is nobody to hear them . “I wish you knew all this Danny, but then again, I don’t. Oh I don’t know, it’s complicated, after all; this is love.”
