Chapter 25 – The voicemail
*Autumn’s POV*
“That’s no ruby, is it?” The man says, gazing at the glittering red stone at the centre of the ring.
“It’s a red diamond, very rare and worth millions.” Rory says and the man’s pupils dilate to the size of the gem itself. I run my fingers over the ring, unable to believe I am about to lose it. It was my mothers, she told me my father gave it to her, that my sister and I, we were named because of it. Scarlett…the scarlet colour of the jewel, and Autumn, when it was given to her, on the first day of Autumn. But it must be done, if I want a new life, a new life with Rory, then it is a sacrifice I must make.
“Worth millions you say?” The man asks, his finger twitching, just waiting to grab hold of it.
“About 2 to 3 million, yes.” Rory says, smiling.
“I’ll give you, 1,000,000 for it.” The man says and Rory laughs. “1,500,000” He says, his eyes not moving from the gem. Rory considers this for a moment before speaking
“2,500,000” Rory says.
“2,000,000” The man says and Rory looks at me before nodding.
“Deal.” He says, holding out a hand and the man shakes it.
“Deal.” He says.
“Transfer the money over to my bank account, then it is yours.” Rory says but I begin to tune out. I can see something, someone, in the doorway, clouded by smoke. I hear Cassidy whine by my side as I move through the smoke towards the figure. I push my way through the grey mist, following the figure.
“Autumn, isn’t it?” The figure says and I hear the click of a door closing. Suddenly, they are there, in front of me. I can just about see her long blonde hair falling in dreadlocks, her blue eyes shining through the smoke, as she smokes, her eyes studying me.
“Yes…” I whisper, suddenly feeling very afraid, why did I follow this woman?
“You’re running.” She says, her eyes burying into me. I want to back way but I can’t, I am rooted to the spot. “You ran, you’re still running.” She says, moving closer to me. “You, you must not stop.” She says, grabbing me hand. I try and pull back but she grips on tightly. “You ran, you are running, you will run!” She cries and I want to scream, scream for Rory. “Run, run, keep running and don’t look back, no, no, not back, run!” She says, her eyes seem to be glazed over, her hand trembling as it grips mine. I panic, the smoke swirling around me like a whirlwind. The woman’s hand grips me tighter and I feel it is the only thing stopping me from being blown away. I feel the floor fall away under my feet and the world goes into slow motion. Somewhere I hear someone shouting at someone to stop, the whine of a dog and someone shouting my name and then the smoke engulfs me and the world becomes black.
*Amber’s POV*
The fiery liquid makes its way down my throat, burying my worries deep inside me. A smile flickers onto my face as someone throws something at Joey in an attempt to shut him up. Sadly it doesn’t work, but the look on his face is amusing.
“Hey, hey Amber!” He calls and I roll my eyes.
“What?” I ask and he grins, flicking on the radio.
“Dance with me tonight?” He asks, holding out a hand to me as the music plays. There is an array of sounds from around the room and I smile, swinging my legs off the chair and getting to my feet, I’m not one to turn down a dance.
“Go on then babe; show me what you’ve got.” I whisper, pushing myself against him and I see his eyes widen and his cheeks flush slightly. I grin as he starts to dance, in his own special way. I keep as close as possible to him, much to the satisfaction of our audience. I move my hips to the music, spinning and turning in my heels and I begin to sing along,
