Chapter 16- The Man Who Can’t Be Moved

*Rory’s POV*

“I can’t” She says and she slides the cold ice knife gently into my heart…figuratively.

“Autumn.” I say softly reaching a hand out to her but she pulls back. “Autumn please, I will get it right; we can find a house, get a job, live normally. I promise I will keep you safe.” I say.

“You said that before.” She whispers, her eyes glistening with tears under the streetlamp.

“I know, I’m sorry, but I will get it right this time I promise.” I say and I see her consider it. I slowly move my hand forward again and at first she pulls away but then, she allows me to slip my hand into hers. “Please, you know I won’t leave until you agree, I will camp on this corner until you come. I won’t move, you know I won’t.” I say smiling slightly as I entwine my fingers with hers.

“Rory, I can’t just leave.” Autumn says quietly.

“Why not? I thought we were friends? I thought you cared about me like I do you.” I say.

“I do! We are!” She says instantly.

“Then why won’t you come?” I ask and she hesitates, looking behind her. “Come on Autumn; just us, isn’t that what we were both dreaming of all these years?”

“I guess.” She says hesitantly and my heart lifts slightly.

“Then what are we waiting for?” I ask giving her hand a little squeeze making her smile. “So?” I ask and she sighs, looking behind her again before back at me.

“Ok.” She whispers. It takes a moment for it to sink in but when it does my heart practically explodes with emotion and a huge smile invades my face. I want to say something but I can’t find the words. So instead I slowly pull her into a hug, careful not to force or scare her. She accepts the hug though, burying her head into my neck. I wrap my arms around her back, my fingers fiddling with her gorgeous hair.

“I love you.” I whisper into her hair, kissing the top of her head. I feel her shiver a moment, and I release her from my arms.

“Rory?” She asks nervously.

“Yes?” I say smiling softly at her.

“Sunday; I will come on Sunday.” She says quietly. Suddenly my heart drops again.

“Sunday? But that’s two days away.” I say and she nods.

“Sunday I promise.” She says and I nod, knowing I can’t really argue if I want her to come.

“Alright. Sunday night, here, 11pm?” I ask and she nods before turning to leave

“Autumn?” I call quietly and she turns back around, I smile “If you change your mind, want to come earlier, if you find that your missing me, I’ll be waiting right here, I won’t be moving without you.” I say smiling and she nods, a little smile on her perfect lips, before she turns away, back to the door.
