autumn
Morning sunlight flooded Autumn's bedroom as she pulled her body out of bed.
It was normal for her to not get much sleep but surprisingly, she slept through till 2:00pm.
Her inability to sleep all through the night without waking up, left her drained of energy in the morning but for once, this wasn't the case and as she headed downstairs, she felt energized and less lethargic.
She figured that perhaps talking to Ashton had put something at the back of her mind to rest.
As Autumn ate her breakfast, she unlocked her phone and checked her messages.
2:10am
from Michael: hiiObviously, Autumn had thought about Michael quite a lot the past day but she didn't know whether or not Michael would even want to continue speaking to her.
But she was glad when she saw that he had texted her.
2:08pm
to Michael: heyAutumn added Ashton as contact and then replied to his text.
10:30am
from Ashton: HELLO ARE YOU AWAKE???2:11pm
to Ashton: I AM NOW2:12pm
from Ashton: DO YOU REMEMBER THAT CAFE THAT ALWAYS PLAYED COLDPLAY AND SERVED THOSE CUPCAKES WITH THE RAINBOW ICING ?Autumn smiled, remembering the place perfectly in her mind.
2:12pm
to Ashton: YES CINDY'S ??She thought of the countless times Ashton and her visited the cafe and how they always ordered the same thing every time they went.
2:13pm
from Ashton: YEAHH DO YOU WANT TO GO THERE IN ABOUT AN HOUR? I CAN PICK YOU UP2:13pm
to Ashton: OKAYY SEE U THENAutumn was already excited, not only because she was visiting a place that she hasn't been to in a long time, but also because she was going to spend time with Ashton. Her friendship with Eva was good but it was nothing like what her friendship with Ashton was.
But a part of her was worried that things wouldn't be the same and the conversations might not flow.
It had been two years after all.
-
After showering and changing into black jeans and a The 1975 shirt, she still had about fifteen minutes until Ashton was supposed to be picking her up.
She went back downstairs and decided to watch some TV as there wasn't really much Autumn could do in her house.
Things like cleaning and the laundry were done by her mum - normally when Autumn was out of the house - and she wouldn't have the motivation to do it anyway. So, Autumn wanted to try and be out of the house a lot.
Eva knew a lot of people, some of them Autumn was friends with but most of them she was just acquaintances with.
At least once a week, she would go to a party with Eva but not being able to drink made them extremely boring.
Other days, Autumn would go for a walk with a notebook and she would sit down and write, which was something her psychiatrist told her to do.
Autumn felt like Luke would be the sort of person that she would want to join her when she did this but she just had to wait and see what was going to happen.
-
"No way, it was Teen Age Riot by Sonic Youth!" Ashton protested, shaking his head vigorously.
Autumn and Ashton were on their way to Cindy's and they were having an argument over what song was Ashton's favorite when he was fourteen.
She knew it was a bit of a trivial thing to even argue about but she didn't care because she was with Ashton.
"You told me it was Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd!" Autumn exclaimed.
"That was my second favorite song," Ashton informed her, grinning and showing his dimples.
After another five minutes of random discussion, they were parked outside Cindy's.
The pink sign that read 'Cindy's' that Autumn remembered distinctly was still there and the only difference she picked up on from the exterior was that it had been painted a lighter shade of blue.
Ashton and Autumn had shared so many memories together in that cafe from the age of eleven to the age of seventeen and when she stepped foot in the building, she was overcome with nostalgia.
She tried to take in everything about it: the corner seat by the window which were the ones she would always sit at, the noticeboard at the far end of the cafe which was completely filled with posters for events and leaflets.
"Two chocolate milkshakes and fries," Ashton ordered, stepping forward towards the counter.
Autumn's gaze moved to him and she couldn't help but smile because that was what they always got when they used to go there.
Ashton pulled out his wallet and Autumn fumbled with her bag, trying to find some money.
"It's on me," Ashton said, sending her a small smile and handing the money to the person behind the counter.
They sat down by the window in the corner, staring out at the unimpressive view: a road.
Absentmindedly, Autumn toyed with her bracelet as she tried to think of what to say.
"I can't believe I even still have this and that you have yours," Ashton said, looking between the identical bracelet on his wrist.
"After all this time," Autumn responded, laughing lightly.
As they waited for their order, they both reminisced together, firstly about the bracelets, then about the first time they met.
Autumn forgot about her uncertainties and felt completely at ease when she spoke to Ashton.
Their milkshakes arrived at the table, shortly followed by the fries.
The arrival of their food led to a discussion about food and then somehow the subject moved to Autumn's date with Luke.
"I think he's starting to like you a lot," Ashton told her, putting a fry in his mouth. "So expect to be asked on a lot of dates."
"I don't know why, I'm just Autumn. The most uninteresting person on earth," She sighed, observing a chip that was on the end of her fork.
"Well, Luke doesn't think you're uninteresting and I don't either," Ashton said as if it were a blatant fact.
Autumn thought Luke was great but she couldn't shake the feeling that she wasn't good enough for him.
"Why do you want to be friends again? You must have hated me."
The words slipped out of Autumn's mouth but she really wanted to know the answer so didn't tell him to forget what she had just said.
Looking at Autumn incredulously, he leaned back in his seat.
"I obviously didn't hate you. I hated that I couldn't help you when you were hurting. I hated that you weren't around anymore. But I didn't hate you," He replied, letting out a sigh. "You said that you are still ill and if you need someone, I want to be that someone for you."
