autumn

"There won't be any climbing buildings tonight, I promise." Luke reassured Autumn, laughing and grasping her hand and intertwining their fingers.

They were in Luke's car on the way to wherever he was taking her.

An album by Good Charlotte - which Autumn learnt two days ago was Luke's favourite band - played quietly accompanied by Luke's crooning and the sound of vehicles driving past.

After a fairly short journey, Luke parked outside a large diner.

Autumn gazed excitedly at the exterior of the building as she stepped out of the car.

It was a 50s style diner - which was obvious after Autumn saw the interior - and had a black and white floor, vibrant red booths and fluorescent signs. She had only seen places like this in movies and had never been in somewhere like it before.

Unlike outside, where the only movement was a illuminated sign that flickered incessantly, inside it was buzzing with activity. There was a distinct smell of coffee, waiters and waitresses bustling around the place, carrying trays full of food and drinks and an overall nice atmosphere.

Luke led her over to the nearest empty table and they seated themselves opposite each other.

After perusing the menu about three times, Autumn decided to order a hamburger and fries and a glass of water.

"So, what do you think?" Luke asked her after the waiter had written their orders down and left.

He put the two menus aside and leaned forward, resting his chin on his hands.

"Of the diner?" Autumn asked, placing her elbows on the table.

Luke nodded. "Oh, it's really cool."

She really did like it. It had a surprisingly relaxing atmosphere, mainly created by the constant hum of conversation and music.

Smiling at Autumn, Luke raked his fingers through his lustrous hair, leaning back in his seat.

Under the fluorescent lighting, she could see the small details of his facial features.

With her lack of self esteem, she still didn't know why someone so attractive and well, perfect, would have any interest in her.

"What are you looking at?"

Autumn didn't realise she had been daydreaming directly at Luke.

She looked at Luke, then did a double take and shifted her gaze to the table.

"Sorry, I was daydreaming," Autumn laughed nervously, starting to toy with her bracelet.

"About meeee?" Luke gushed.

She smiled faintly and met his gaze. "Maybe."

A grin formed on his face - the type that was contagious.

Autumn pressed her lips together to prevent her smile from widening.

"I'll be back in a sec," Luke said, slipping out of the booth.

Autumn watched as he walked across the diner and stopped at at the luminous jukebox.

Wondering what song he would pick, she rested her head back and waited for it to start.

The second it started playing, Autumn knew what the song was: Stay by Mayday Parade.

"One of the things they keep modern," Luke said as he sat back down.

"I love this song," Autumn said elatedly, singing the lyrics to it in her head.

"I know." A grin was still plastered to his face.

Autumn arched her eyebrow in confusion. "You were wearing a Mayday Parade shirt when we met, you know the one-"

"Oh yeah."

Luke grabbed both of her hands, lifting them up and entwining her fingers with his.

"What a night it is, when you live like this," He sang, gazing at her with his captivating blue eyes.

Autumn could feel her heart melting as those words can came out of his mouth - figuratively, of course.

"And you're coming up beneath the clouds, don't let me down," He continued, leaning closer to Autumn.
"All the love's still there I just don't know what to do with it now."

To put into words, she currently felt like there was a butterfly infestation in her stomach. "You know, I still can't believe we both did some things I don't even wanna think about."

The proximity between the two was becoming closer and closer and Luke didn't sing the next line, or the line after that.

"Autumn," Luke said softly, letting go of Autumn's hands and bringing his hands to her face and cupping her cheeks.

"Yeah," Autumn breathed.

She couldn't deny that she was a little nervous - a good kind of nervous though.

All she could focus on was the blueness of Luke's eyes and the lyrics of the song.

He trailed his thumbs down to Autumn's lower lip and she felt the butterflies in her stomach multiply.

"Can I kiss you?"
